An honest review of… Mermaid Cafe, Bar and Restaurant
Service We opened the door to the sounds of laughter and chatter supported by a adequate set of background music. When we arrived at the waiting area for our seats we were immediately greeted by the front of house, who was very friendly and showed us to our table. On the way the waitress also issued a friendly greeting. I’ve been to many an establishment but find myself hard pressed to remember a warmer welcome. We were checked in during the meal, each time with a warm and friendly demeanour and when paying the bill the team had not added a service charge to the bill, but was throughly deserving of one. We were wished a good day by all the staff upon exiting, truly exceptional service. Rating: 5 stars
Food I ordered the savoury pancake stack with an extra hash brown and a couple sausages, quite intentionally to see if the food timings would match. You can imagine my surprise when a beautifully presented breakfast garnished with the perfect amount of syrup and a touch of parsley presented a stack of 4 pancakes sandwiched with bacon and my additions cooked exquisitely, adorning the plate. I cannot compliment this establishment enough. This is the standard for breakfast in the area. Rating: 5 stars
Value All in all our breakfast and drink came to just shy of £30. Considering the additions and the food quality, this was a nominal price. Tip not included (which we added based purely on merit) you’ll find it a difficult task to find greater value in any nearby competitor. I strongly recommend this establishment to any who are looking for high quality food and service, without the premium of which we are custom to...
Read moreWe visited this restaurant last week and had a close encounter of two dogs potentially having toxic poisoning. They offer a dog food menu however they need to develop their knowledge on food items that could be toxic to dogs. I asked for 4 sausages and when they arrived I immediately identified leeks in the sausages. I raised this up with a member of staff who went to chase this up. I was then informed that this type of sausage isn't what they usually use and that they had a change of suppliers. We were then asked if we would like a different food item and we chose chicken as we were told that the sausages would be substituted. When the bill came we were charged full price for chicken which came to £14.40 whereas 4 sausages would have came to £6.40, this is over half the price for an irrefutable error on the restaurants part. We addressed it to the owner and his response was your dogs had chicken therefore you have to pay for it or I'll contact the police. Despite raising the concern of potential poisoning to the manager he had showed no remorse and no sympathy to the severity of what could have happened. Online it states that no matter what quantity a dog consumes of leeks it can cause a toxic reaction, I was very surprised to hear that a member of staff saying that a dog would have to have loads of leeks to be poisoned. You may not view dogs as members of a family but I definitely do! I hope you take this comment into consideration to prevent any potential serious...
Read moreBooked a table for 14 for 2PM Sunday. Turned up, table not ready. When it was ready, it was a table for 8 & a table for 6 - many family members had travelled some miles to be together, so two seperate tables was incredibly disappointing. Apparently, a large group had overstayed on the table we were to be given, which suggests that perhaps the place doesn't allow sufficient time between bookings?
The place was very full, so service was a little slow, which is understandable. Starters turned up at different times, with a couple not turning up at all. Main courses were varied, from poor to mediocre to good, with anybody ordering a roast dinner discovering their food was cold - not lukewarm, but so cold as to be uneatable. Food arrived at different times, with all the roast dinners, 4 or 5 meals, having to be returned & microwaved to make them warm enough to be eatable, so you can imagine how they tasted. Some people had finished their meals by the time others meals arrived. After that, we obviously decided not to stay for pudding or coffee.
To their credit, after some prompting, the roast dinners were taken off the bill, but I'd have much rather paid for hot dinners!
All in all, a terrible time was had by all. I've visited previously without any issues, but it seems they struggle when at capacity, which is a shame. Perhaps visiting at a less busy time would be better?
I'll update my review if I visit again, so if it's a one-off I'll adjust...
