We were in Godalming for my 93 year old mums cremation - appropriately on her 70th Wedding Anniversary. We had caught the 5am Ferry from Portsmouth and we were starving. The food was BRILLIANT VALUE. Couldn't fault it. Absolutely great value and service.
I have lived in the Isle of Wight since 1974 but used to live in Mill Lane Pirbright Surrey. Almost every Sunday night we would go to the MAD GIN MILL CLUB at the back of the ANGEL PUBLIC HOUSE. The name has been changed now sadly but you used to walk under an Archway in the middle of the Building to a wooden hut around the back. We were jammed in there like Sardines and the TOP BANDS we saw in there have become HUGE HOUSEHOLD NAMES. Our favourite was Duster Bennett playing "BRIGHT LIGHTS - BIG CITY. Jethro Tull, AUDIENCE was another favourite, CHICKEN SHACK, FLEETWOOD MACK, (who were such a HUGE LETDOWN that we all got 12/6d - half our 25 shillings entry fee back) FREE, BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST, KEEF HARTLEY BAND, VINEGAR JOE (Elkie Brooks, Robert Palmer, Jim Mullen, Pete Gage, Steve York, Mike Deacon, John Woods and Keef Hartley.) So many other later famous bands. What a privilege to have seen so many fledgling Bands between...

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the service I received during my recent visit. Normally, I look forward to my two days off work and especially enjoy breakfast during my stay. However, my experience this time was extremely disappointing. And today told there's no eggs. Why don't they get some from Tesco's.
Firstly, breakfast was delayed for about 20 minutes, which I understand may have been due to a shortage of staff in the past. However, what I found unacceptable was being told that both coffee machines were offline and under repair. I visited on another occasion they are still ropy. As a regular guest who typically enjoys a Mocha, I found it frustrating to be offered only soft drinks as an alternative. This is simply not acceptable for the service I expect.
What made matters worse was the lack of concern from the Duty Manager, who did not seem to take the situation seriously or offer any meaningful solution.
I am truly disappointed with this experience and may reconsider staying here in the future unless these issues are addressed.
I hope this matter is taken seriously, and I look forward to hearing from you. Updated...
Read moreI have been visiting Godalming for many years and frequently have eaten at The Jack Phillips with friends. I have to say that over the last few months there has been a marked downward spiral in the food. There was a manager there who was very 'hands on' and visibly oversaw things, he is no longer there and the staff seem to be lacking in training, and the kitchen staff have little skill in portion or presentation. They offer a 'Fish and Chip Special' after 2pm, but despite that, upon ordering a regular Fish meal at 1pm, we were told that there was no cod available. So no hope for anyone waiting for 2pm. A recent order of Nachos (snack) was dismal, not presented with the usual extras like cheese, jalapenos etc, a meal with chips comes with very few these days. I ordered the grilled chicken Caesar salad, it came swimming in dressing, a bottle malfunction? On the plus side, the drinks were good, and reasonably priced, but Wetherspoons please get your kitchen staff sorted out! I wont be back for some time to give you opportunity to...
