I arrived at 10:45 on Wednesday morning. I was very impressed by the decor, style and spaciousness of this recently renovated building.
There were three staff behind the counter, but when I asked about the coffee they use none of them knew about it, not even if it was a medium or dark roast. They were very courteous and tried to help by showing me the bean pack. Unfortunately the labelling was too small for me to read quickly.
When the coffee arrived, large, two-shot Americano with soya milk, it looked dull and lifeless, with no crema, and the flavour was in keeping with the look. I was very disappointed, but I feel the situation could easily be rescued by perhaps choosing a different bean, adjusting the barista process, or checking the grind. I had to buy another shot just to get a bit of flavour. So I spent £3:25 for a very average coffee. But it's not about the money...
I believe good, properly prepared coffee should be the norm these days, especially for a place calling itself a coffee...
Read moreThis is a nice place to stop off at if you're looking for a quick bite and refill some lost calories. We had takeaway coffees which were ok, but better than going to large chain coffee houses. The brownie was good, but the chocolate almond cake was a small portion so 3 mouth fulls and it was gone. We didn't realise you can sit upstairs where you can see the river, which would have been way better to look at than watching standstill traffic in the main part of the cafe. There's plenty of gluten free options, savoury and sweet for the gluten intolerant. Plenty of room inside for mum's and pushchairs. It's wheelchair friendly but no hope if you need to go to the bathroom. There's free parking for 1 hour in the Public / Coop carpark next door which should give you time to refill thd hungry kids tummies and double down on your...
Read moreWell, the coffee here is very good and the food reasonably decent, though the portions are rather small. Unfortunately the cafe consists of a very large room with a huge ceiling and a small balcony. This makes conversation extremely problematic for anyone with hearing problems as you feel you are having a drink in a hangar. Add to this a cafe with little atmosphere and you have a problem.
Indeed, it's such a problem that I often travel a further 8 - 10 miles to find an alternative.
Bottom line - if you have to take coffee in Okehampton it's the best they can offer but it's isn't...
