PizzaExpress — Restaurant in West Suffolk

My wife and I went for lunch, thinking it would be an easy meal. We've always had slow service at this branch in Newmarket, but being our closest branch we thought we would come here to use our Tesco vouchers that were due to expire (what a mistake this was). First waitress sat us down, and the first thing I mentioned was we have Tesco vouchers is that ok, her response "yes of course no problem". We then saw the offer of 3 course for £24.95 and asked the waitress if this is okay, she informed us this is totally fine, and she also went on to mention, without us asking, that we could also get a classic pizza and a drink for £12, and we should also download the app to get further offers which we did. The waitresses must have been had a shift change, so a 2nd waitress took over, after slow service we had to go and wait at the til for 10 minutes to pay the bill to find out, after ordering more than we really wanted, that we couldn't use any of these offers with Tesco vouchers. I know it's not going to break the bank, but it's the principal we were told one thing by one of the waitresses to then find out we we were misinformed and ended up paying a lot more than we thought for a quick and easy lunch. 4 of us 50 something's popped in for a meal and wish we had not! What's happened to Pizza Express Newmarket ?? arrived 6pm ish, not many other diners in. The place looked a undecidedly tired and not how we remembered it having visited often over many years but not since 2012.

Meet and greet was fine and ordered some cold beers also fine. Had to find a waitress to give order explaining that time was tight, ordered 2 pizzas and a salad plus 2 chip portions. Pizzas had almost no toppings on and nothing like description on menu, chip portions were £4 ea and had 8 chips per portion! when we complained as these arrived, we were told that this is company policy and the manager took the chips away rather than simply offered any solution. Unbelievable! Salad was very nice. No staff then came to see us so we went to ask for the bill and explained our disappointment. The waitress whose name we have, was very rude, laughed with surprise and told us the same chef had been there 10 years without complaint! Eventually the stand in Manageress came over and we paid for drinks only, we were staggered at the way it was handled and told her we will not be going back. The reason we were so cross was the waitress's attitude, and we were told we are not the first to complain...

Service was dreadful, we arrived at the restaurant at around 6pm and had a table booked. We were placed right near the door and he had asked if that was alright. We initially said yes but there was a draft every time the front door opened so we asked to be moved and was told there are no more seats as they are booked out, the restaurant was pretty empty and we had also booked… he asked if that was okay when seated like we had choice.. anyway he said no.

It took forever to get a drink around 30/40 minutes. He didn’t know which gin was what yet he made them and we witnessed this.

There was an older couple who were seated near us at the end of the evening and they had their mains arrive before their drinks. The customer asked for their drinks and the waiter raised his voice and said it’s a busy night and it’s not his fault. Absolute shocking attitude.
