I went on Saturday the 17th of September. I won't be back for some time, partially due to geographical convenience (I'm a few hundred miles away now) and partially due to how rubbish the place was. Rather rubbish indeed.
The place smelled of fish - a rather pungent pong that seemed to hang in the air like an ominous piscine specter... Like the spirits of a thousand angry mackerel had risen from a dumpster behind a fishmonger and collectively decided to haunt Gallimore's instead.
The smell was a off putting, but that was just the first few steps of the descent.
The waiting staff, though putting in a solid effort and giving it a damn good try were overstretched and under resourced, and maybe a bit disorganized - with communication breakdown between the waiting staff and the kitchen becoming quickly apparent.
Seriously - get that fixed, it's embarrassing having a poor waitress go to the kitchen, only to return umpteen times to tell the diners that half of the menu isn't there... I felt sorry for them, I really did.
If you want a beer - I suggest brewing it at home, you'd probably get it faster than waiting for it to come up with a drinks order (if they don't lose it en route).
I had the cheeseburger, which was okay (leaning towards bad - but I'd been waiting long enough that napkins were starting to look like a viable option to stave off starvation) - it reminded me of the school canteen, but the chips must have been taken from the old academy too as they were not fresh out the fryer. Nope. Just nope.
Mediocre is too good a word here, it was a poor performance. Mediocre has connotations of bland and average - this was just plain bad.
I cannot blame the waiting staff, but I would think that the owner (who bounced through with a strange smile like a magician at a children's party, as if he was oblivious to the tepid misery he was serving up - or at least endorsing) should do something with the kitchen - give them a kick in the backside and focus the menu a bit more - the diversity leads me to think that a few of the dishes are likely 2 minute microwave jobs from the supermarket.
Of course, as part of British culture, we smile and be polite - even though we're trying to swallow what is likely a kitchen sponge served on an old bun with a side of reheated day old chips and salad made from floor sweepings.
I had heard this place was meant to be good - please do not believe the glossy pamphlets - what you get on the plate is pure, sauteed, pan fried disillusionment.
The profiteroles were underwhelming too, which I suppose was better than nothing as a lot of the puddings that were on the menu weren't in the building at the time... On a Saturday at lunchtime... So, yeah...
If you crave disappointment - this will fill your misery meter right up.
If you want something nice - go somewhere else, I'm sure there's something superb a stone's throw away.
Avoid Gallimore's and just go to Greggs...
Read moreJust visited here for the first time. Female blonde haired waitress very friendly, couldn't do enough to make sure we were all happy including my 3 year old son. The waitress tailored his order to suit him and it was fab! We arrived just before it got busy and unfortunately did have long waits once it got busier but to be honest due to a full restaurant because of the 50% off I think the staff did well catering to everyone's needs. They were all rushed off their feet and it couldn't be helped. The salted caramel fudge cake was to die for! I was a little concerned regarding spacing/distance regulations for covid-19 the tables upstairs were full meaning there was less than a metre between my son and an adult on another table. There should of been a screen in my opinion. You couldn't leave the first floor without nearly brushing past people sitting down which for me was a little too close for comfort. Restaurant was clean and hygiene standards were on form. Just the spacing was the issue for me. Food was pleasant. Fresh and tasty but did expect a little more...pezazz? I guess? It was homemade which is a bonus but felt the sauces on the chicken a little too watery and bland. Presentation could of been a little better to. I also think the decor needs updating to bring it into modern times. I do think it was overpriced for what you got. For two starters and 2 mains, 1 kids meal with ice cream for dessert, 2 pints and 2 lemonades, 1 cordial and 1 dessert came to a huge £70.50 before the discount! I was shocked when I got the bill. But maybe that's me being naive in today's climate. Maybe that's the going rate for a meal out with just a couple and a young child these days. Gosh if it wasn't for the discount I wouldn't of been able to afford that! Next time I'll take extra care checking prices before I book somewhere lol £14 for chicken bacon and cheese, hard to find sauce with veg is a bit steep.
I won't come again based on my experience but I don't think it's a place that should be disregarded because of my opinion. You need to try for yourself as everyone's different. People come to this restaurant and have been doing so for years so they're clearly doing something right!
If you like homemade traditional food that's not too fancy but is still tasty and want to be in a friendly welcoming environment then definitely go and visit! I just am very fussy and have high expectations. God knows how I'm no one special...

Gallimore's is 99.9% of time has been excellent. However, on a recent visit on Christmas Eve it couldn't have gone more wrong on every aspect.
It completely ruined our Christmas Eve.
We had already pre-booked with a £10 deposit especially with-it being Christmas Eve. On arrival the place was empty and we were told to sit anywhere even though we asked for a window table, Gallimore's didn't even have the reservations list.
We were given 2 menus 1 a Christmas Eve menu and 2nd a normal mid-week. The Christmas Eve menu are awful so we ordered from the normal mid-week menu.
The older waiter was a complete nervous wreck laughable at times.
5 minutes later we were told we could only order from the Christmas Eve menu only and we had been even the normal mid-week menus by mistake. As it was near evening time we didn't want to risk leaving, in case we couldn't get in anywhere else, so very reluctantly we ordered from the Christmas Eve menu.
Only to hear the table across ourselves had been allowed to ordered from the normal mid-week menu, the person around was the elder waiter so called the elder waiter asked what is going on and after much discussion with other staff we could for a 3rd time order from the normal mid-week menu.
Although most the meal was good, myself I ordered steak with sauce and dauphinoise potatoes, only for the steak to arrive no sauce and chips.
I complained to the elder waiter who by this time, was boarding on Basil Fawlty !!!
Off he went into the kitchen again waiter come back saying no dauphine potatoes so we guessed you wanted chips…… no mention of the sauce ?????????????
My wife & I had enough finished our meal quickly asked for the bill but yet no offer of any discount for all the mistakes only for the full bill & no deposit deducted and once again I had to complain saying I had paid £10.00 deposit which was only then taken off.
Normally Gallimore’s is great but if it could have gone wrong it did on every count.
My advice if you go to Gallimore’s don’t go as...
