You want to visit a real - if not somewhat eccentric, English Pub in Winchester? Then the Black Boy is your Pub. I have just walked every mile from London to Winchester and visited many, many Pubs on my journey and this has to be the one. You may be lucky enough to walk through the door to be greeted by the hirsute, friendly Landlord David. If not him then one of his young and helpful barstaff. The decor will keep you entertained for hours - see if you can spot the stuffed wild boar! This is a Free House and they have their own Lager and Beer on tap, plus a good range of ciders and local ales and of course a good selection of wines and spirits. There are 2 fireplaces and the Public Bars are warm and cosy (lt's around 10C max outside as I write). The lighting is subdued and soft. Lots of areas to sit with friends or your partner. Even comfy sofas. The background music plays soft and low and wil take baby-boomers back to their younger days. As I sit here, I would say that the age range is predominantly 18- 40 something but throw in a few grey hairs as well. They don't do food but Tuesday and Thursday nights you can get delicious pizzas. But the beers good, the staff are friendly, the pub was absolutely BUZZING with atmosphere when we were there and the wide variety of tipples were excellent. Despite the buzz, it was all good natured and babies were welcome, as were dogs on leads.
The only reason it dropped a star was the unpleasant toilets....
If you're visiting the area, give the pub a go - it will be enjoyable and...
Read moreThis pub is approx' a 5 minute walk from the statue of King Alfred. The pub is often described as being quirky, eccentric or unusual. All are true. It certainly has character which adds to its charm. Food was not available when we visited on Friday lunchtime. There was a reasonable choice of ales and cider on offer and my good lady enjoyed her wine. A couple of fires were alight with plenty of seating ranging from wooden chairs, armchairs and sofas available. Service was fine friendly and equally professional. We will definitely return here and certainly recommend it to others. If after your visit, you can stroll down the road and within 2 minutes have a peaceful stroll...
