We live about 10 minutes away, by car, and were about to leave home when one of my grandsons called for something which delayed us. As soon as he was sorted we quickly drove over to the GD. We didn't bother looking for a table when we entered, there weren't many people in there anyway and the bar area was totally deserted, except for one young lad who was there to serve, or so we thought. I politely asked if we were still OK for the two course offer. His eyes gazed up at the wall clock. It was one minute past five. He looked directly at me and said, 'No, it's finished now .' So I was just as abrupt and we quickly left the place and went elsewhere. I think it was the smirk on his face that did it for us. OK, so the deal is up to 5pm, but I thought these places were keen to get people's business. Evidently this young man doesn't know that. I'm sure he could have used a bit of discretion. The clock was probably a bit fast in any case. I would have fully understood his attitude if the bar was busy. But there was only us stood there. This isn't our first visit to the Greave Dunning, we have eaten there lots of times and often with friends. But not anymore after this poor attitude by a jobsworth member of staff. We were lucky enough to spend a few nights over Easter in Spain. The staff in our hotel couldn't do enough for us. There was no jobsworth attitude from any of them. They always smiled and whatever service we asked for was always made readily available. Spain are in dire straights at the moment, and clearly people are eager to hold onto their jobs. Maybe that's why they seemed so helpful. I don't know. But this young lad must be absolutely certain of keeping his job. I hope he does or maybe he has other ambitions. Good luck to him anyway, but I don't think we will be visiting the GD for a while yet. If people can't be bothered to be helpful, there are plenty of other establishments...
Read moreHad visited there a number of times previously and really enjoyed the food with no complaints. However, in the past 5 or so months have visited there on 3 occasions and been sorely disappointed. On the first two of those occasions, several items on the plate (chips, onion rings, steak) were cold and had to be re-served. Always willing to try again, we returned on 09/04/2019 with an open mind. Deja vu struck again: several items, Chicken, onion rings and mushrooms, had to be sent back TWICE. They were re-served within in a timely manner initially, however, after having to return them the second time, the wait for them to be re-served again was excessively long. So much so that I had almost finished the rest of the food on my plate and my partner had already well finished her meal. (The onion rings and mushrooms served to her were also cold, but not an issue for her given that she was not going to eat them anyway). When served for the THIRD time, it was blatantly obvious that the onion rings and mushrooms served to me had been thrown into a microwave and heated beyond any acceptable level. They were certainly hot, but so congealed, soggy in texture and stuck together, that they were inedible. Although staff waiting on initially dealt with the issues well, it was clear that they, and I as a customer, had been badly let down by the kitchen staff. I can only assume that the staff waiting-on shared my exasperation, given the fact that no staff subsequently returned to our table to check on the latest offering and on settling the bill, no concessions were made. In summary - thoroughly...
Read moreVisited today with my husband & parents. My stepdad is vegetarian whist my mum, husband & myself are vegan. We specifically chose to eat here as I'd been impressed by the menu that we'd seen online. Unfortunately the food didn't live up to our expectations. We ordered 2 naked glory burgers, a vegan lasagne & the vegetarian toad in the hole. The veggie in our group was very satisfied with his meal, it was a large portion & very tasty. However, the vegan meals were disappointingly small & very poor value. The burgers came with only a side salad, which was little more than a garnish. The buns that the burgers were served in were both rock hard, whether this was because they were stale or had just been toasted for too long I can't say. Despite the fact that every other burger on the menu was served with chips, no potato side was included in the higher price (£10.29 instead of £9.79) demanded for the vegan burgers. Since your chips aren't vegan we had to order a side of the glazed potatoes, which tasted like unseasoned boiled potatoes. The lasagne also only came with a side salad, aka garnish. The lasagne itself was quite bland & not as full of vegetables as I expected from the description. It was also a small portion & came with no cooked veg or potatoes to make the meal filling. Overall, I would not recommend the Greave Dunning to vegan diners as, although there are a few options, the vegan food is overpriced for the portion size & quality...
