We adore the John Seldon because it is so old school. It is warm and cosy, homely and welcoming. It is not fancy, so it would depend on your preference in terms of what the occasion is. If you are looking for delicious food, generous portions, happy, well-behaved patrons, many, of the older generation, friendly service and a warm welcome - this is the place. South Africans can feel whether non-British people are really welcome, at the John Seldon, we always feel at home. They serve Beavertown Neck Oil beer, which is my absolute favourite, so that just adds to the mix! 👌🏼

Staff friendly, food nice and not too expensive. They even have a best czech beer Staropramen. Toilets very clean. Highly recommend. Would definitely go again soon.

Nice enthusiastic local pub with seating indoors and outdoors and a nice food menu with a lot to choose from. Bartenders could be a bit friendlier though

We recently had a family members funeral, he was young and it was unexpected. The family have had so much to deal with along with their grief so when we heard we could have the wake at the John selden which was within close distance to most family members we thought, great, a local pub which no doubt he would've drank in at some point what with it being close to his home. On arrival we were instructed the staff weren't ready and we had to order from the main bar rather than the private function room we had hired. The bar staff came in 45 minutes late and were incredibly rude even to our elder relatives and one heavily pregnant relative. They tried to bribe us with £50 to leave as apparently WE were rude! And now are trying to bribe us to remove our negative reviews so the public do not know how we were treated! Their behaviour was horrific to a grieving family and we left the wake after 2 hours even though we paid for 4 as we were so disgusted. In all honesty I think they should close their function room and not agree to hire it out as they clearly cannot handle private events and should not bite off more than they can chew! Safe to say all the guests and myself will never be returning to the John selden and we WILL be passing the information on for the...

I was disappointed by the end of my night at what I previously thought of as a very friendly and excellent pub. Their charge on card for any spend under £10 means anyone without cash must open a tab for an evening's drinking at the pub, which I was disappointed to find was wrongly added up at the end of the evening. Myself and a friend had bought the same amount of drinks, alternating rounds between us, but my tab was summed up to £5 more than his. The barmaid was disgruntled by my disagreement with the figures and so I paid, but decided to return after I left because I was sure that I had been overcharged. I was met with a hostile reception from the young barmaid, who went through the calculations aggressively once more without listening to my explanation of what I had bought and then stormed off from the part of the bar I was at, saying she wouldn't go through it again. I was appalled at this awful customer service from this barmaid, when earlier in the evening I had believed this pub to have excellent public service. I will not be...

We came to this pub as a group of friends and family and the girls behind the bar could not of been more lovely, the three stars on this review is a star for each of them. We had a lovely afternoon and the girls even went out their way to go buy the kids that were with us cakes! After that it went downhill pretty quick, the owner arrived and I have never encountered someone so rude, the whole atmosphere changed. She made us feel so unwelcome and we even overheard her saying how the pub was for locals and it makes her feel weird there being new people there. We ended up leaving because we felt so awkward despite initially having a brilliant time. Lovely little pub if you live local but if your from out the area I would AVOID unless you love feeling completely unwelcome. Thanks girls for a lovely afternoon pre Emily...
