While driving back down to London from a long and exhausting hiking trip in north Wales, we were in real need of a good pub and some good food on our way home. We picked this place based on its Google ratings and boy it did not disappoint! Delicious home made pies and a wide selection of homemade flat and fizzy ciders as well as great ales. A curious, fascinating, and downright interesting assortment of rooms, areas and places to drink, eat, watch tv, play pool and generally just be as happy as humanly possible - including a whiskey room and a standalone pool hall. We left wishing we could spend more time there and even talked about planning a trip back. You won't be surprised by my glowing report to hear the staff were genuinely lovely, funny and a perfect example of what customer service should be. We took a 1 junction detour down the M5 where we should have turned onto the M40 back to london, and we couldn't have made a better choice. The only disappointment for me, was reading that it only has 4.5 stars, were up to me, I'd...
Read moreThought we would try the gardeners arms for some food tonight. Signed in at the door and we’re told there was a long wait for food due to takeaway orders. Walked back down to the bar after finding a table upstairs. Ordered drinks at the bar, After the same Bar man tried to sign us in for the second time.we then asked how long the wait would be for food. The barman said “ask the chef how long the wait would be for food” Absolutely laughable service. I thought fawlty towers had closed Years ago but we were just waiting for manwell to pop Up for the full comedy experience. Unfortunately no manwell or any sign of a menu. We were made to feel like we were intruding on the takeaway service!. Note to the management you may want to look at serving the people in your pub rather than worrying about takeaway service. The ale was nice hence the one star but if your looking to order food I would give this...
Read moreNever visited the area before so Googled local pubs. This one looked really interesting. Soon as we walked through the door we knew we had done the right thing. We were greeted by Edith the landlady who found us a nice comfortable corner. The menu was extensive and good value. We had to wait a while for the food but at least you know it is freshly cooked, unlike the chain pubs. Nothing was too much trouble for them. We were absolutely stuffed and really did not need a pudding. But there was a promise of bread and butter pudding with custard of course. It was hard to resist, my god it was the best we have ever had. It was a very pleasant visit, lovely people, food and great selection of beers. Next time we are down there we will defo...
