Dixie Pig is the definition of a hidden gem—a true hole-in-the-wall spot serving up real, home-cooked meals. Fair warning: it’s cash only, so be sure to bring some bills with you! The restaurant offers a cozy, split atmosphere: one side gives off old school diner vibes, while the other feels more like you're having a meal at grandma’s house. Whether you prefer sitting at the bar, in a booth, or at a table, there’s a spot for every kind of comfort. I usually go for one of their breakfast plates, and they always come with pancakes—which are absolutely delicious. On my latest visit, I had the western omelette with added bacon, plus biscuits and gravy. Everything was cooked to perfection. Honestly, I’ve never had a bad meal here; every dish has been consistently amazing. They’re only open for breakfast and lunch, but trust me—it’s worth working your schedule around. --- TLDR: Dixie Pig is a no-frills, cash-only joint with incredible home-style breakfast and lunch. Cozy vibe, unbeatable pancakes, and every dish is a winner. Bring cash and bring your appetite!

We stopped in at the Dixie Pig as we were passing through town where we throughly enjoyed a delicious breakfast omelette, a bacon egg and cheese burrito, along with excellent Texas style hot salsa. In addition, to savoring full flavored and robust tasting coffee. The waitresses were all very personable, attentive, and quick with coffee refills. They got our breakfast prepared and brought out to us in short order. We even enjoyed a short visit with the owner, wherein she described how the Dixie Pig has been open for business continuously since 1931 in the same location serving the greater Abilene area all the while family owned and operated. It was great food, the dining rooms super clean and neat, and we loved the pig figurines lining the shelves on the walls. We look forward to the next opportunity we have to stop in again.

This is a neat old style cafe. It is an old family owned and operated restaurant! There is a non-alcoholic bar to sit, order, and eat at or you can choose to seat yourself at a table to be waited on. The service is good and the food was prepared and served quickly. I had two eggs over hard that came with three slices of bacon, hash browns, and two huge biscuits with gravy. This was all for about $7, if I remember correctly. This is a neat place to eat with good table service.

Not Horrible, but Close - Not worth a return trip or an initial trip if you have not yet been there. The staff just seemed rushed, not rude, but no personal contact and every single one of them just looked like they wanted the shift to be over. I visit Abilene often and like to get off the worn path of places and restaurants that line the freeway exits, on a recommendation from a local I know I went to the Dixie Pig on a Saturday morning around 9:00 a.m.

The parking lot was full, as was the restaurant, I was thinking good thoughts as this tends to be a good sign for an establishment. This as I noted is not "just off" the highway and appears to be visited by locals only, the only thing I can say about my visit when compared to some other reviews of this place that rate it more than 3 stars and say how good it is - I must have come on a bad day. Either that or the rave reviews are from people used to eating very bad food, and accepting of extremely poor service and bad attitudes, in which case mediocre food and just lousy service and attitudes must seem like heaven in comparison. OK lets get to the rest of this -

I was seated at a table that was "clean" - at least no dishes left on it. There was still a large smear of sticky syrup in the middle of it, I asked for it to be cleaned up, it was. Utensils come wrapped in a paper napkin, a knife and fork - if you order coffee you get a spoon with it in the cup. No napkin holder on the tables, if you need another one you have to ask for it.

Coffee - when you could get it, was not really hot and lacked full coffee flavor, maybe they use some really light blends, some large water to coffee grind ratio, or just add a few scoops of grounds on top of previous, not saying they do, but it was tasteless enough to give me that opinion. As the place was very busy, it takes awhile for the wait staff to get back around to see if you need anything - if they had just one person or two running around taking care of more coffee/water/napkin requests it would really help the overall service and impression.

Prices - fair, good actually, a basic 'side' of bacon comes with three strips instead of two, I give them points for this.

I ordered (no cutesy names or numbers on the menu, you just point out the item on the menu or read it off to them for what you want) the two egg, bacon, hashbrown, and (2) biscuit and gravy item. Eggs were ordered over easy, they arrived over hard...cook was rushed with multiple orders perhaps and just lost track, who knows, but for a breakfast menu item during breakfast, I expect my order to be correct. The hashbrowns, came cold, not brown, kind of soft, very tasteless. The biscuits, are the only thing I found with my order that I just loved. They are a mix between a traditional biscuit and a roll, kind of hard to describe but they were indeed both unique and excellent. The gravy on the other hand came out of a package mix, as dull and lifeless as the eyes of the wait staff, a real disappointment. Thankfully I did not order the 'French Toast' as a person at the table next to me did, it was plain white bread, not Texas toast, and it still looked white, almost no batter and browning on a hot stove top or griddle. I casually asked that person if it was a special kind of french toast, the reply was they were not sure what it was, but it sure was not french toast that they were familiar with...I will leave it at that.

This is a cash, or 'local check only' establishment - no credit cards...my thoughts after I left was that was a good thing as I would sure think hard about contacting my card company and refusing payment...maybe this is why it is cash only?

To sum it up, this is no place special, it is a place to stop and eat, check your expectations at the door. Where I live in Texas, the cook would be fired, the place would go out of business - I do not think I am being unfair in this assessment, it was my experience and one I will never repeat again. Dixie Pig - you have seen...

Two big thumbs down! Rude servers/waitresses ignored us and rolled eyes at us about request on coffee refill...but also refused to acknowledge or do anything about burnt and overdone pancakes...but what I can't get over is the gentleman whom ordered the pancakes also had a double biscuit and gravy and the biscuits were so hard he couldn't eat them and was told no they couldn't or wouldn't replace them with soft or fresher ones because they are from the same pan. I have worked in food/restaurants many years and customer service is usually a priority and never have I encountered such hostility and disregard from any business or establishment. $37.00 For the worst breakfast that we wasted hard earned money and a feeling of being racially profiled or discriminated against because of being Hispanic or not White because all the other patrons we're smiled at and treated very well. So unless you want to have less than mediocre food and or service I strongly suggest not to waste time, energy, or money at the Dixie freakin pig!! No solution or apology or anything but ugliness and hard burnt breakfast. My family and I are never gonna gonna recommend anyone to eat there or go back! Go to Denny's or IHOP for the price, better quality of food and servers to be better and not leave being angry and still hungry! 2 thumbs...

Oh my stars! There’s a reason this restaurant has been in business since 1931. Two owners! The Langford’s and current owner Barbara, who’s worked there for 40 years. Some of her family members work there, too. She knew everyone who walked in and called them by name or asked how do and do was doing. Barbara walked over to our table to ask how everything was and then how we found out about The Dixie Pig. We had a great conversation, as reflected in this review.

All waitresses were smiling, cheerful and joking with each other. Even the kitchen staff were having fun.

When we first arrived, there was a wait but we were seated in less than 20 minutes. Our waitress immediately and took our drink order. When she came back with steaming fresh coffee and unsweetened tea, she took our order. I had the two egg breakfast and Husband had the pancakes and a side of bacon.

Old school diner, great service and delicious, cooked to order food at reasonable prices. The biscuits were crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. Over medium eggs done perfectly and as requested, the bacon and hash browns were crispy. And food was out quick and hot. The 3 pancakes were as big as a dinner plate! All for less than $20.

Make the trip out here when you’re passing through and you’ll see why they’ve lasted so long.

Well done,...
