I went there with my husband and elderly (83 yrs old & 86 yrs old) in-laws. It was around 5 p.m. and the restaurant never quite became half full during the time we were there... which is a good thing, as far as we're concerned. Mom, Pop & my husband had the country fried (a.k.a. "chicken fried") steak dinner, I had the 2 smoked pork chops dinner (you can get 1 chop for $6-something or 2 for $8-something). The dinners came with your choice of 2 sides (of which there was a wide array) and a piece of grilled Texas toast.
I was pleasantly surprised by how reasonable the prices were, given the generous the portion sizes, not to mention, the quality the quality. The only non-positive (NOT negative) comment I heard was that the coating on the steaks was not like any of the 3 of them had eaten before; my husband gave me a couple of bites of his and, to me, it seemed like more of a batter than a flour-type coating...and I loved it).
There is a rather wide array of sides to choose from. My husband had pinto beans and mashed potatoes with country gravy, while my in-laws and I had warm cinnamon apples and a "loaded" baked potato (sans chives); a loaded potato costs no more than a regular baked potato.
The staff were all very friendly and the service was prompt. In fact, the food came out so soon after ordering that I was concerned it wasn't going to be very good. Thankfully, my fear was unfounded!
The decor is a bit dated, perhaps, but decently clean. One 'problem though', in my humble opinion, is that they had a wall dedicated to OU but NO OSU to be found! In a state where there is such a strong college rivalry, I should think a business would want to include BOTH schools, rather than alienate the fans of the one which you are NOT paying homage to. LOL! :-)
So....based on our experience, all in all, Prarie Kitchen is a decent place to go for a filling, satisfying, casual meal at a reasonable price. Whether alone, as a couple, as a family, or with a group, everyone should go...
Read moreDon’t let the reviews fool ya! This place is not as great as it seems. For starters, I am a vegetarian. I cannot have meat because it makes me sick. When I ordered the mozzarella sticks, they seemed odd, almost like they tasted like meat. Then, after two mozzarella sticks, I examined the other ones and found bacon inside them and on the outside of them. This means the mozzarella sticks were clearly cooked in the same area as the bacon, which is not acceptable by any means! Next, we get our food. My dad had the grilled chicken breast with corn, rice pilaf and a piece of bread. He took a bite and realized not only was the chicken bland, it was undercooked. He didn’t have his bread, and even though the waitress said the rice pilaf was seasoned, it tasted just as bland as everything else. We sent back the chicken, and they said the manager was going to cook it for him. We waited for what seemed like forever until my dad finally said he ready to leave, and that’s when the bread came out. The waitress said she would take it off the ticket, but when she came back she didn’t take off the whole meal, only the chicken. (Instead of taking the whole $8.99 meal off, they took off the $3.99 chicken) When I got my food, which was just a plain waffle with some butter. The top was crispy, but the bottom was undercooked and the butter had a funky taste to it. My sister got her meal, bacon cheese fries (which on the menu it says the cheese fries already come with bacon, we just wanted to make sure she got the bacon). When it came out it looked like fries and cheese. My dad said “we asked for bacon on top of the cheese fries”. The older lady said “there’s some right there!” And it was only 3 small pieces. And it’s a big plate of fries. My sister also said the cheese had a funky taste and the fries were just as bland as everything else. OVERALL, I do not recommend this place. The staff was nice, but the...
Read moreI eat at Prairie Kitchen a lot. Mainly I just breakfast so this is what that review will cover.
The way the place is decorated is outdated but welcoming, the only thing making it feel "open plains" being the massive amount of western antiques (and not so antiques) hugging the walls. Most is sun bleached and dusty, but mildly charming to say the least. More than a few of the tables could stand to be supported and re-leveled; most have a wobble when you lean on them. The floor should probably be taken out and replaced with easy to clean vinyl wood or tile. Carpet is never good in restaurants.
The staff service has been on their toes each time I've gone in to eat. They're attentive, friendly, and move quick when they've got a goal. The kitchen isn't too noisy and the cooks seem to get along well (no rude language or excess bickering at each other).
On to the food. The cups are plastic and make me think of a college cafeteria, as do the plain plates and outdated silverware. I understand that the place is busy but updated cups to heavy glasses could change the whole feel of the place.
Their sausage is pre-packaged and unremarkable. The pit ham is possibly also pre-packaged but it's seasoned enough to fly under the radar. The eggs are typically cooked just like you ask, nothing special there. Bacon is deep fried and greasy. The pancakes are delicious and a must, waffles too. I love the flavored syrups you get and the presentation is always cute. The omelettes are also very well done. The steak, however, could use a lot of work. Under seasoned, chewy, and I'm never sure what level of done I'm going to get. Not a fan of their steak.
All in all its a decent little kitchen and about on part with most mediocre mom-n-pop places you go to. Nothing exceedingly remarkable but the price is cheap and you get what...
