Over the weekend I was looking for a bowl of soup for the soul. We had visited Ph Anh Dao once before this, on New Year’s Day and it was delightful so we thought we’d pay them another visit!
The restaurant is very spacious, so spacious that two different restaurants occupy the same building! The staff are shared as well. I will say it’s a hard to get the staff’s attention. They stand at the main register in the middle of the lobby and it’s hard for them to see you waive your hand depending on where you’re seated. But once they do see you, they’re very quick to tend to you! It’s got a ton of natural light and endless seating. There is also a small parking lot behind the building, it’s in the same parking lot as the hotel parking spaces but the hotel spaces are marked.
I’m personally a huge fan of tripe and tendon, but I always feel like I never get enough of those when I get pho at other places. Pho Anh Dao offers a build your own pho so I got a large bowl of pho with only tripe and tendon ($14.50). I also swapped the regular noodles for Ho Fun noodles ($0.50). We also got a bowl of Garlic Noodles with Grilled Beef & Egg Rolls ($17). The garlic noodle bowl is the main reason we came back, even though soup was the main goal! And of course, we grabbed a cup of Viet iced coffee. I totally forgot to snap a picture of the drink menu, but I do remember the drinks being reasonably priced.
My bowl of pho came out super fast! They gave generous portions of both tripe and tendon, so I was super happy about that. I tried the broth on its own before adding in any veggies. I prefer a very deep and rich pho broth, this was very light/bland and honestly wasn’t hot enough. The Ho Fun noodles were slightly firm because of the broth temperature. I’m also usually not one to add sauce directly into my pho, but it needed it. Even after adding hoisin, sriracha, and toppings, the pho was just okay. I was pretty disappointed but anytime I’m given a hearty serving of food, I can be pretty forgiving.
The viet iced coffee was very well rounded. A lot less sweet than other viet iced coffees you can get in the area which I appreciate. It kind of tastes like they only use milk or cream rather than condensed milk, the coffee itself has that nice roasty/bitter flavor viet coffee is known for. I’ll have to grab the Thai iced tea next time! We had asked if could get the Thai iced tea with coffee added into it but they said they sadly couldn’t do that.
The Garlic Noodles with grilled beef and egg rolls was great! Just like the first time we had it in January. The tender beef paired with a bite of chewy noodles was the perfect mixture of sweet soy sauce and garlic. I would definitely come back a third time...
Read morePho Anh Dao is a Vietnamese restaurant in Alameda that I decided to try a couple of days as it seemed to have OK ratings on Yelp. It is located on Webster & Atlantic and unlike most places on Webster has a small parking lot which I guess it shares with a hotel that is present in the back.
It is actually two restaurants at the same location. You have Bucket O' Crawfish on the left/front and Pho Anh Dao to the right/back section. The menu is like any other Vietnamese restaurant which includes Pho, Bun and rice plates. I decided to get the Bo Kho ($9.25 for extra-large) which is stewed beef noodle soup, to-go. I had to pay cash as they have a minimum to use credit cards that I did not hit. After ordering it was a short 10-minute wait and I was on my way.
I got two containers one with the noodles and the other with the soup, which was a good start but unfortunately it did not go any further. The noodles had all clumped together and turned into one hard lump. No amount of soup was going to help loosen them up. This was like eating rice cakes instead of noodles. The soup itself was weak and had about 4 pieces of beef inside. Overall a very poor dish.
Price wise it was pretty cheap but the quality of food was terrible. I think these folks should actually take some time and see what they are actually serving to their customers to understand their shortcomings. After this experience I doubt that I...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at Pho Anh Dao, and their beef pho truly blew me away. The moment the steaming bowl arrived, the rich aroma of the broth filled the air, inviting me into a world of flavor. The broth was perfectly balanced—deeply savory with a hint of sweetness, and just the right amount of fragrant spices. Each spoonful was a warm, comforting embrace.
The beef was tender and cooked to perfection, melting in my mouth with every bite. The noodles were fresh, soft yet springy, and soaked up the broth beautifully. Topping it all off with fresh herbs, crisp bean sprouts, and a touch of lime brought the dish to life with a wonderful contrast of textures and flavors.
Pho Anh Dao truly knows how to craft the perfect bowl of pho. If you’re in the mood for an authentic and heartwarming Vietnamese meal, their beef pho is an absolute must-try. It’s not just food—it’s a comforting experience that leaves you...
