Came in today, ordered food for the family and apps, all that came out fine. I asked for a Calzone, no red sauce and for my toppings, extra ricotta and mushrooms. Got an almost burnt calzone full of only ricotta and diced mushrooms, was disgusting. It's covid gave the staff the benefit of the doubt, waited 20 minutes for the white chick with dreadlocks to return to check on us, she didnt, had to flag her down. Explained the problem, she seemed confused, argued with me, I told her that her tone was rude and she walked BACK to the table to ARGUE with me. She came back from the kitchen and admitted it was a mistake. I had to work, lunch ruined, asked her to remove it, paid my check and left. This is the second time my calzone was ruined. First time I asked for extra mushrooms and mozzarella, and ended up with a giant bread pocket full of uncooked mushrooms. A calzone is not a complicated dish. Pizza dough folded over with or without red sauce and toppings, mozzarella and ricotta. The last time the waitress was amazing and immediately empathized with me and got it fixed. This lady refused to admit she made a mistake, and didn't even mention the lack of mozarella until I mentioned it, and continued to argue. She came back with the check and blamed it on the kitchen, which is shameful because the kitchen obviously made our clams, my wife and kids food just fine, dont drag them into the dirt because of your lack of willingness to just admit a mistake. I'm a vet, and I've worked in the hospitality business, I tip 20% by default unless there is a reason to not, and I always give plenty of empathy and understanding but this woman's unwillingness to just say "im sorry, ill get it fixed, would you like it remade or taken off your check" until I asked for it is inexcusable. I've had great experiences at this location but with two failed calzones and this time a service issue, I cant really say I have a reason to come back. Theres tons of amazing pizza in Anchorage and the valley. I had no complaints about anything other than the way she handled my issue. If a customer has a complaint, just apologize and get it fixed, I didn't personally attack her or assign blame to anyone from the start I just explained my issue and asked for it to be resolved. Best of luck,...
Read moreWell! I wish I had taken more pictures at this place but it was the first time I'd encountered a "schooner" of beer outside of the Pacific Northwest. It distracted me from taking any further photos at this remarkable establishment. I can't talk highly enough about this pizza joint. It's conveniently located right off the Glenn Hwy and easy to get to and then back on the road again. I loved the quirky layout of the building and the obvious expanse that has taken place as the place has grown.
As an out of towner or "tourist" it was a treat to walk in and start looking at historical local Alaskan memorabilia. I got the sense that there was a lot of nostalgia and pride in the support of the local community. It gave off a super family friendly and welcoming air as we were escorted to our table. Marlis was our server and she was so friendly, honest and helpful. She was more than accepting as I worked my way through 96 oz of beer.
Let's talk more about beer. Being from the PNW I'm used to a Schooner being significantly smaller than the "Mystery Schooner" Marlis brought me. It was a massively chilled 32oz bowl of Pizza Man Pale Ale to start with. 32oz! For $6! And it isn't even a Coor's, Bud Light, Miller Light, Rainier type of beer joint. They must have had close to 30 beers on tap and regular Schooners were only $8.75! For any beer on the menu! None of this PNW different prices for different beers. It blew my mind.
And the food was really great! Beyond expectations. Chicken wings, cheese sticks, steak sandwiches, egg plant parmesan and of course PIZZA were all great. Their menu could work a little harder on identifying gluten free and vegetarian options as there aren't any markings in the menu. The menu itself is exhaustive and unexpected in it's offerings. I suspect you can go back every other day for a month sharing plates and not quite get through the whole thing.
You gotta go. Make the drive, flight or float to get to Eagle River and experience the Pizza Man. Local treasure outside of Anchorage and worth the trip across the board. Say, "Hi" to Marlis for me and throw back a Schoon (or 3, if you're...
Read moreMixed review. Ordered the special pasta along with pizzas. Pizza was good nothing to complain about. The pasta special on the other hand wasn't great.
Picked up to go and when I opened the plastic wrapped pasta boxes there was absolutely no butter white wine sauce or parmesian to speak of. Called up and was met with "its an invisible sauce" from the kitchen... So I kinda went mild Karen's saying I know what i white wine butter sauce is this doesn't have any. Was told to hold while they talk to a manager. Started my drive back. Half way down the hill I'm told "spoke to owner manager and kitchen and was told it was made the same way we always make it. We are happy to make 2 new pastas and send em to you in exchange for the others". Told em I was on my way already.
I dont care if people make a mistake but own it don't bs your customer. Brought them in and had manager come look at the plain pasta with topping without any sauce or cheese to verify there was no sauce.
They made it again and had me verify it had sauce. It did and they included complimentary garlic bread. So good job on front of house and management for correcting it. The sauce was extremely light, had to try and search the airs of the aftertaste to get any hint of white wine. and the dish overall was very underseasoned had to add salt pepper and garlic at home bcs it was lacking all of that. It tasted like a tossed together pasta at a cheap food court.
So pizza was very good, plenty of topping and cheesy as hell. Pasta was not worth $17 ea even after being fixed. Service was mixed bcs though they did fix it, treating a customer like an idiot telling them it's an "invisible sauce" wasnt...
