I went there for the first time on my birthday Oct 2019 & I was not entirely disappointed. The food was delicious but they had some type of cross contamination issue that caused me to have a mild allergic reaction to their scallops. I informed the staff that seated us, the wait staff, and the chef that I have a fish allergy (I can only have shellfish). The only potential issue for a place like this for me would be if someone at my table ordered fish (which they did NOT) because then it would be cooked with the same utensils & on the grill as all the other food. Aside from that, I have dined at restaurants like this for over 15 years and literally all over the world.... and I have NEVER once had an allergy issue even when I don't say anything to the chef etc. If my family has its own table then I don't bother because I know that fish will not be made in conjunction with everyone else's meal.... but on the rare occasion where we have shared a table with other restaurateurs I make sure to inform all staff & it has never been an issue.
The staff at Shogun was decent for the most part.... they could've been more attentive & friendly but no one was outright rude. The place is a bit on the smaller side compared to other steak houses I've been to but it didn't have a cramped feel at all.. it was a nice cozy vibe. I would suggest making a reservation if you plan to have a party of more than 2 people because it wouldn't be hard for the place to get packed, especially on the weekends.
The food was the best thing about this place, the filet mignon was so tender it melts in your mouth 😋. The scallops caused me to have an allergic reaction so it may be possible they store it with fish... which wouldn't be wise or something wasn't cleaned properly 🤔 Otherwise the scallops were perfectly cooked and the size was adequate so minus my allergic reaction I'd say they were good 😉
The only thing that I would improve is the portion sizes. The prices are far from cheap, which is normal for this type of dining experience, so for that fact alone they should provide generous amounts of food. I've been to other steak houses exactly like Shogun & they serve much bigger portions. Filling the plate with more rice and veggies would've been awesome! Overall, Shogun is a place I would return to & recommend that folks try... with a few advisments of course 🙂... but all in all the food tasted good. Hopefully my next visit will be a better one & I can update...

If you’re looking for both spectacular food and entertainment in Fairbanks, Shogun Japanese Restaurant is the place to go! My family of eight visited during peak hours and, to our delight, we were seated within just two minutes. This wasn’t due to a lack of patrons—quite the opposite—the restaurant was bustling, but the staff’s efficiency and excellent service made the seating process seamless.
The food at Shogun is nothing short of excellent. Although it deviates from traditional Japanese presentation, the artistic flair and craftsmanship of the chefs were truly a spectacle, capturing the attention and admiration of our kids. Each dish was a display of culinary art, enhancing the overall dining experience.
We ordered the steak and chicken, both grilled to absolute perfection, and the gyoza, prepared in a traditional Japanese Hiroshima style, which was authentic and delicious. The restaurant also offered a variety of Japanese drinks, adding to the authenticity and depth of our meal.
Shogun Japanese Restaurant is not just a place to eat; it’s a venue to experience the skill and creativity of the chefs, all while enjoying a meal that delights the senses. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a memorable meal...
Read moreThis is a place we used to eat regularly when we lived in Fairbanks. This is the first time back in 3 years since we moved and we were kind of disappointed in the cleanliness and service. The manager was extremely helpful and attentive so no issues there. However, the griddle still had food on it from a previous party. He didn't began heating up our oil without cleaning it and didn't clean it until my husband asked him if he was even going to clean it first..
Then our chef splashed burning hot oil all over my arm leaving burn several marks when he used the spatula to stir the egg. I yelled and he looked surprised and kind of annoyed that I said it burned me.
The most disappointing was when we asked for soap in the women's bathroom when we entered the restaurant at 7pm (so we could wash our hands before eating). They never brought it. It was 9pm when we left and there was still no soap in this busy restaurant. How are employees washing their hands after using the bathroom when the customers couldn't even wash their hands before eating or after using the bathroom. So we asked for soap again before leaving and waited awhile before we just left......
