My first visit to Super Taco "El Guero" last week was… well, a mixed bag. I'd heard whispers about the place, and being in the area, I decided to finally give it a shot. As someone who's spent time working in taco joints, I arrived with pretty high expectations, especially after seeing some tempting online photos that promised an authentic Mexican meal. Unfortunately, the initial impression was a bit lackluster. The dining area looked like it had just hosted a football team – chairs were askew, sauce splattered on tables, and there was trash on the floor. Not exactly the welcoming vibe I'd hoped for and it seemed like a fresh clean-up was long overdue.
A young employee quickly took my order for the taco combo: two carne asada and one chicken taco, with sides of refried beans and rice. He also brought out a metal tray with corn chips and red salsa. The chips were great, but the salsa was pretty standard, nothing to write home about.
My taco plate arrived quickly, and at first glance, it looked promising. The refried beans looked fantastic – good consistency, not runny, and topped with queso fresco. The rice also looked well-cooked. And the corn tortillas! They were big, light yellow, fluffy, and had those perfect grill marks. I thought, "Okay, this could be good."
The Main Event: Tacos
Then I looked at the meat. The carne asada immediately seemed off; it looked like very low-quality. The chicken appeared slightly better. Despite my doubts, I took a bite of the carne asada. I was right – the meat just didn't justify the $14.50 price tag (before tip). It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. It was just okay, definitely not worth a special trip if you're driving 30 minutes or more. The chicken was a small improvement, but I had expected higher quality meat from a well talked about, hole-in-the-wall spot like Super Taco. The Unexpected Stars However, it wasn't all disappointing. The refried beans and rice were truly outstanding – some of the best I've had anywhere. They were perfectly cooked, not burned or watery, and packed with flavor. Honestly, they were the highlight of the meal. I'd go back just to grab a tub of each for a get-together!
Final Thoughts & A Recommendation I'll definitely give Super Taco "El Guero" another shot, but next time I'm skipping the carne asada and trying a burrito or quesadilla with chicken.
By the way, if you're heading northbound on 400 and craving amazing carne asada, make a stop at CT Taqueria at the Halcyon (right off Exit 12). Their carne asada tacos are some of the best I've ever had at a restaurant. Cheers, and may your culinary adventures lead you to...
Read moreI’m from California so my expectations might be high, but this is my review They overcooked the calamari & it’s frozen so it’s rubbery. Steak super burrito with rice and beans didn’t have much flavor. Didn’t taste Mexican at all. I took 2 bites & and threw it away. The stakes was very fine not chopped like carna asada. If I didn’t get it to go, I would’ve asked for a refund and the restaurant and I still might call tomorrow for one. UPDATE- I spoke to management and was told to call the following day for a refund and ask for Diana today I called for my refund and spoke to Diana who argue with me that it was against their policy to refund me because I put a review up I definitely will not be returning and I will let all my coworkers at work also know not to patronize them The food is ...
Read moreFirst off, who flipping taught y’all how to cook? Omg every bite was better than the last! The staff is super friendly and attentive, the place is clean and modern looking. I honestly have no idea how this place isn’t packed. The food came out hot and fresh and I couldn’t be happier with my meal. It looks like a family owned and run place because you can’t get a burrito this good from chipotle or Taco Bell. I’m only in town for a couple more days and it looks like I’m only eating there the rest of the time. Y’all need to stop going to chain restaurants and the subpar food and check out this local place! Can I take y’all home with me? I wish I could give you an extra...
