Went to the Red Oak Café on the N Bypass 35 in Alvin, TX for breakfast.
This is my second time here in a little over a year, and the experience was just as good as the first time.
From the outside, this place is unassuming. If you didn't know if it was there, you might not know it was a Café just by the look of it. The building itself looks like it might be some sort of office building, but when you walk in, it's a completely different story, and the atmosphere couldn't be further from the look outside.
I didn't have to wait to get seated, as it was probably only 1/4 full at the time I went. I was seated at a table in the middle of the café, perfect for people watching!
A server came over and took my drink order, which I received promptly. A water, and a "pecan" coffee. I had the coffee the last time I was here, and it's got a lovely pecan flavor profile that's not too overwhelming. I couldn't pass it up.
When the waitress came over, I ordered the "Big Breakfast. " Three eggs (scrambled), country sausage (two large patties), a freshly made biscuit (so good), grits, and two well sized pancakes.
The eggs were perfect and fluffy, not too soft and not too hard. The sausage wasn't exactly what I hoped for (I thought it was going to be a link, my bad), but it was delicious, so no issues, there. The biscuit was REALLY good, and I ended up making an egg and sausage sandwich with it. There were still plenty of eggs left to have a full plate.
The grits were fresh and delicious, even after sitting on the side while I ate my eggs. They didn't get hard on the top like a lot of grits bowls do. No, they were fresh and delicious.
After that, pancakes! These were two, fluffy, fairly large, tasty pancakes with the perfect consistency. After all the food I'd already consumed, however, I could only eat half the plate, but I took the other half to go. They're going to be perfect when I'm hungry again and ready for a mid-afternoon snack! They checked up on my coffee refill several times. Awesome.
The service was great, the decór was modern and open, and the food really lived up to the hype. It was my second time there, and it won't be my last. If I lived in this town, I'd be a regular, for sure.
I'm on a cross-country road trip, and the Red Oak Café is a perfect place to stop and rest while also enjoying a great meal if you're near the Houston area.. I can't see anyone being disappointed by the delicious food and the friendly wait staff. It's a great, kind of hidden place on a major roadway filled with chain restaurants.
Red Oak Café is a friendly environment, great if you're alone or with a family, with generous food portions. With tip, I paid less than $25 for my meal. Definitely affordable and worth the price. I will easily visit here again should I pass this way.
I'm generally a late eater, so... get here on the early side. They open at 7am and close at 3pm Daily Tues-Sunday. They are closed on...
Read moreThis was a hard review to do.
The facilities are wonderful, clean and beautifully done. A small warning the owners are religous so if quotes from the bible make you uncomfortable this might not be your place. They're on the walls.
Friendliness of the staff was wonderful, very inviting, and very knowledgeable of the menu.
Price point was just right to be in direct line of competition with nearby Kelly's.
Here comes the hard part the food. I ordered a big breakfast and everything I heard about the place was true with some exceptions. The pancakes are soft and delicious, the eggs are light and fluffy, the hashbrowns are hand cut and seasoned lightly. Here's where they lost a star. The biscuits were nothing to scream about, you could tell they weren't made the same way as the rest of the meal and it stuck out. The sweet tea was... well? So being from the south and living here my whole life when you order sweet tea you're expecting a certain level of "Get me my insulin!" their tea was sweetened but has a very peculiar aftertaste that just dialed down the experience.
Why would I focus so much on the tea? Your drink is your first impression of the place, and my first impression came with a strange after taste and me trying to not ask the waitress to just get me a coke.
I will be back, because I like to explore the menu of a place like this but I will be cautious to not make the same...
Read moreWe have been a customer for many years and have raved to our friends and family about the service and food, Today I encountered some really poor customer service. I prefer not to be seated by the restroom- by the way they always want to seat us by the restroom. So We go back to be seated. Mind you there are several vacant seating. (Thinking that they are social distancing) Ppl come in (non minority) and the host greats them with a smile seat them at tables and they offer us the community table. I’m not of fan but think that’s the only thing available. I look around and see how the other customers were greeted and served right away - as we wait wait and wait. The other ppl that were seated after us on the community table were waited on. (Non minority) I can’t help but to think that race had something to do with why we were treated and thats why we continue to be overlooked and always lead to be seated by the restroom when we go there.
I look back to see if anyone is seated by the restroom and yes you guessed it - it was a minority couple.
We had to get up and leave as we have the right to choose where to eat.
This review may not make a difference anymore as I will not be back. However going forward they may inform the staff to treat all ppl of all races with kindness and fairness.
If there was a no star I would...
