Edit: I'm editing my review as of our last experience. We went in Monday evening, just after 5pm to celebrate my son's 9th birthday. We were seated at a hibachi grill with four other customers, who had already mostly finished their salads and soups. Our waiter told me we had TWO MINUTES to figure out our orders because the rest of the table had been waiting. I should have either asked to be moved or honestly just left after that, but instead... we rushed ourselves, got a little testy with each other, but figured out what to order. Our waiter was rude/dismissive with my year old who wanted to order a soda - he could not tell him what options he had and just kept saying "Wait.".... it was awkward and as it was his birthday, I felt bad that the waiter didn't even try to communicate kindly with him. He wa trying to tell the waiter that it was his birthday and he was really excited. ANYWAY. The rest of the meal, our waiter did not acknowledge or say a word whenever I tried to engage him - even just thanking him for each interaction went with no eye contact, no acknowledgement. At the end of our meal, we got up to say hello to the fish in the fish tank. The waiter came over to my husband and took his drink out of his hand without saying a word to him - just literally snatched it. When we stared at him in shock, he said "So you can sign." and handed my husband the receipt for our meal. We weren't asked about dessert, they didn't bother to acknowledge AT ALL that it was my kiddo's birthday, and they were just so rude. I am honestly still shocked and saddened that I did not address it at the time. I had wanted to not cause more stress for my family during what should have been a celebration. But this was unacceptable treatment and while we tipped the standard amount, I do wish we hadn't now. What used to be our favorite family meal for birthdays was very unwelcoming last night. The food was good, but we left feeling disgruntled and a little...
Read moreI’ve been eating here for over 15 years and have never encountered this bad of service. When we first sat down, we noticed we waited over 20 minutes to get our drinks. We saw that our server had forgotten about us and he ran the bar to grab our drinks. After he brought them out, he was eager to get our order going. He kept trying to walk away while we were still talking and it made us uncomfortable. We ordered calamari that seemed to be half the portion this time, and was too spongy with no flavor. I ordered the hibachi steak and chicken, and my partner ordered the udon ramen bowl. He wanted to try something different, and was extremely disappointed when it came out. Both of our meals were cold. We decided to try just a few bites, and determined that we wanted to talk to our server to correct the issue. The item that came out was the wrong item, and wanted to get it fixed. He waited over 15 minutes to check on us and we were constantly looking around for help and there was no one. My partner had to wave his hand, and we have never done that at a restaurant before.. we treat service industry with respect, but we felt like we were constantly getting forgotten. He finally came over and we explained that we may have ordered the wrong thing and we’d like to switch it out with the right thing. He then proceeded to say that since we ate some of it, that if we ordered something new it wouldn’t be compensated. We decided to ask for our check and were given boxes, he assumed we were taking it home.. however we did not. I work in service industry and I was appalled that neither a manager or compensation wasn’t offered. Instead we paid $70 for food we didn’t eat, and that was cold. Lastly, if it was a busy night we’d be more than likely to understand, but it was slow evening. Plenty of staff were there, but none were able to help. Won’t be returning, extremely...
Read moreFor hibachi in Ames this is your best bet! It's also your only bet so take that with a grain of salt.
My wife and I have been there a few times now and service has always been consistently average.
This last time we went for there lunch special over my wife's lunch hour. We arrived at 11 and were immediately seated. We were then left alone at the hibachi grill for 10 minutes while other tables were sat and then told that it would be another 20 minutes until our chef was able to come, all this while a group that came in after us was able to get started right away. So we asked to be moved to the regular seating area, which they accommodated, but we were then told could not use there lunch special pricing. After wasting 15 minutes getting to where we could order food the food was good when it brought to us. Maybe. A little over saused but not bad. We were able to eat and get her back to work within the hour. We could not sit at the hibachi grill or use their lunch special and make it within that hour.
Another time we went for a date. Chef burned the fried rice. It's 22 bucks a person and he burned my rice. This was a few months ago now, but it wasn't the best of...
