Catfished by a pirate bar.
The appetizers are called Underway and we were on our way to a disaster or a meal.
I spent the last two years wanting to eat here for my birthday. We tried to go last year but health issues kept us away. I made reservations for the captains quarters (this small four person table is in a corner in the back but is quieter than the front tables).
We had a few mixed drinks and champagne. I understand making money off of your mixed drinks (we own a bar), but this is a little ridiculous. There was maybe 8 oz of total liquid in this very large cup with tons of ice. Four big sips and it was gone. My husband had a sample of their in house rum, since they don't carry any brand rums (Captain, Sailors, etc.) It tasted nothing like rum. It almost tasted like a white corn whiskey. No molasses taste, just tons of ethanol tastes.
Appetizer : Chicken wonton Super small portion, very spicey and pretty presentation
Stir-Fried with steak: Noodles were good but steak was very dry and we didn't eat most of it
Pan Roasted Hainan Chicken & Rice: This is an airline breast (which means a breast with leg attached) but it looked and tasted like airline food. Looks boiled, no salt, pepper or any seasoning. It was possibly the worst chicken I've had from a nice restaurant.
Loco Moco Burger: Burger was large, fries were good
Grilled Swordfish: Cooked well, no fishy taste, portion was small but out of all of the things we ordered this was the best. Even at that it was not an amazing plate.
I feel so disappointed since I've waited so long to come here and I came here for my birthday. It is very pretty inside even if the pictures on instagram are heavily filtered. The food was just one disappointment after another. I really can't believe how bad it was. I spent so much time reading reviews and looking at pictures online. Someone needs to reexamine the menu. I heard the waiter tell the table next to us they had 30 minutes, I can't imagine spending this kind of money and having a clock ticking. By the time it was over I didn't even care about taking pictures of the inside like I wanted too...
Read moreThis is one of my favorite places I've ever been to. First thing to know, you'll need a reservation and it is 21 and up. The atmosphere of this place is incredible. When you walk out there's only a small humble little stand that says aloha on it beside a couple of rum barrels. There's a nice seating area outside on the street as well, but the magic happens on the inside. When you're led in through the big wooden double doors you are transported into a capsized ship that has become a dream on the inside. Tables line the right side and on the left side you have a big beautiful tiki bar with decorations that can defy description and can only be experienced to get the full understanding. We were celebrating my birthday and were led past the initial bar, past a waterfall in the walls and led to the back bar lounge. We were led to a two top table with a personalized card saying happy birthday. The service is the same type of service you would expect before star restaurant, but it has the casual nature of a friend. The menu is loaded down with so many drinks that it's overwhelming but the servers and the bartenders make sure that they explain everything to you and help you find exactly what you want. They have award-winning drinks, award-winning food and we were told that they changed the menu every five to six months. I am a fan of a hurricane so I got a hurricane and they brought me a special birthday daiquiri shot. We had already had dinner before we came and were just there for drinks, but the menu looks spectacular and I cannot wait to go back and try the food! If you want an experience... This IS THE PLACE! I have a tiki mug collection that I'm very proud of and I end up walking away with one of their specialty Tiki mugs too. It was packaged nicely and wrapped in a nice carrying bag with their logo on it and inside they gave me a sticker as well. I was beyond impressed with the entire experience and cannot wait to go back again! Next time I'll spend more time there, have some of their delicious looking food and more of those award...
Read moreI can't say enough about how wonderful my experience at Strong Water was on Saturday. First, I'm a big fan of fancy cocktail places. So, when I learned about Strong Water months ago, I was very excited about the possibility of going there. The place is so popular that it's very hard to get a reservation on the weekend, but you can get served without a reservation if you choose to sit outside. My sweetheart and I we're lucky enough to get to sit inside. The ambiance of the place is exactly what you would expect. I've been to a number of tiki-themed bars including Trader Sam's at Disneyland. Strong Water has the best decor and feel of any that I've been to. At a place that is so popular, I didn't expect the staff to be so friendly. But everyone there was amazing. Including the host and our server, Eddie. They were so accommodating in every regard. And the owners of the restaurant have gone to great effort to make every detail interesting and entertaining. The menus were works of art. Because it's October they offered a number of seasonal drinks and I'm a big fan of pumpkin spice, so I got the pumpkin cocktail. My sweetheart wanted to get something more tiki traditional, so she went with the Mai Tai. We were both delighted with how quick the service was and how delicious the drinks were. We also ordered food and again the service was fantastic and the food was delicious. We ended up ordering the 8 oz wagyu burger. We asked for the side to be tater tots and then the server asked us whether we would like the curry sauce for the tater tots. We said yes. The meal was unique and tasty and satisfying. We're definitely going to be coming back and I'm sure we'll bring...
