(Last visited July 13, 2023.) The cheesesteak game in southeast Michigan is pretty impressive, so I've made it a mission of mine to check out every one of these spots that someone recommends to me. So here we are today in Ann Arbor to check out Mr. Spots!
Atmosphere/Appearance: It's as simple as you want it to be and as unchanged as ever. University of Michigan sports memorabilia and pictures plaster the walls. There's the quintessential drop-ceiling, light wooden paneling on the walls, rounded bench seats and TVs for menus. I don't remember music playing, but there had to be, right?
Service: You just go to the counter and order your food then it's brought right out to you. Nothing crazy and we had no issues.
Food: I started off with their Philly Original which pays homage to, well, you can guess. Lol. Their own cheesesteak version has like, marinara, onions, peppers and all kinds of stuff on it, but I'm here for the Philly! I got their 10" and the bread was soft, the meat was cooked well, the American cheese-wiz was tasty, but it was fine. It was pretty standard for a cheesesteak, nothing crazy. I was also able to try their Suicide Sauce with both a waffle fry and a wing. It was HOT. About a 7 on the Weavi Heat Scale (I.Y.K.Y.K.). I could definitely handle it and went back for extra dips. The sauce had plenty of good flavor alongside the heat.
Value: Cheap eats here man. I'm happy Mr. Spot's has been able to keep the prices low-enough for college students to be able to have a decent meal here without breaking their bank.
In conclusion, I liked it here! Would I go out of my way looking for Tom Brady's favorite cheesesteak that got him through college? Nah, but the food here IS GOOD! I wanna come back and check out their other flavors of wings! But there's a reason Mr. Spots has been here so long! Make sure you come and...
Read moreFive Star Cheesesteak: This joint is legitimate. 3 Stars on food, ONLY because I’ve had one item there. That item, a regular cheesesteak with onions, hot and sweet peppers, was incredible 5 Stars (or more). On point for how a cheesesteak should be made; stay with me - there is a dance of flavor and experience that occurs when the steak meets the hot griddle, as that sizzles and begins to char the other ingredients are brought towards the heat, gently sautéed onions, sweet pepper relish if you desire, spicy jalapeño warming near, and flavor filled banana (pepperoncini) peppers. As I waited the requisite 8-10 minutes for my sandwich to be well prepared I took in the local focus and flavor of what this shop means to it’s community. Plastered on the walls of the small eatery are salutations to the the prowess of University of Michigan collegiate successes, Tom Brady, may be the most prevalent, Jim Harbaugh hold his space, but more importantly to me, the exceptional dominance of the Michigan Gymnastics program stood out, National Champions! While reviewing the accomplishments of Big Blue on the walls, I am distracted by that distinctive sound of ‘chop chop, Ching Ching’ coming from the griddle top cook surface. Chingching, Chop chop, Ching. If you are in Ann Arbor, and want a Cheesesteak - do not miss MISTER SPOTS, (And if you come to the SF Bay Area I’ll point you towards my favorite cheesesteak on the West). To the Staff and team at MISTER SPOTS - You rock. Thank you, Thank you so much for bringing this elevated experience to Ann...
Read moreI made a huge mistake. First time ordering here as I'm in town on business and just wanted something quick and easy. Got a great steak sandwich, I'm from philly, so I'm a bit biased. Not the greatest steak sandwich I've ever had, to be honest, but better than many I've had back home. And better than MOST I've had elsewhere.
Here's where I made the mistake, and it wasn't the steak. I am a huge fan of spicy stuff. I almost always go for whatever is hottest on the menu. I didn't go for anything crazy, standard steak w/ fixins. But I also ordered some of the suicide sauce. HOLY MOLY THAT STUFF IS HOTTTTT! Again, I love spicy food, it's rare that spicy stuff gets to me.
Here's where I went right.... I ordered that sauce on the side. My first bite I treated that steak like a french dip. And I'm very glad I went that route. I just wanna say, buyer beware of that suicide sauce. It's delicious, but daaang, yo. Bravo for making such a delicious sauce with such a veeeery potent kick in the face.
4* because I am biased on steak sandwiches, but again, one the better ones I've had outta Philly.
I didn't eat in, so I won't comment on service...
