My wife and I were celebrating our 1 year anniversary in Annapolis in 2015 and wanted some crabs. I simply googled "crabs in Annapolis" and Wild Country was one of the top recommendations. We treated ourselves to a dozen jumbo and they were FANTASTIC. Hot and delicious, just the right amount of seasoning! Wild Country Seafood is primarily a pickup crab place so were were fortunate to grab one of the half dozen picnic benches to eat at. Staff was polite and we really enjoyed ourselves!
Fast forward to 2016 and we decided to go back for our anniversary. I called 5 days early to reserve jumbos again, guy on the phone told me he would hold them. When we got there we were told all they had were XL. I said okay fine we'll take them. Come to find out if you did not call ahead to reserve, the best you could get was mediums at that point. After all this was Memorial Day weekend, I can understand they would be pretty depleted of crabs. I even overheard the cooks saying that had less than 10 dozen left in the whole place! So I had two problems with this; 1) they either sold my jumbos or never had jumbos and lied to me 2) when we got the "XL" crabs they were more like larges/mediums. So we're already off to a bad start.
Anyway, we get the crabs and enjoy them. They are hot a delicious and have the perfect amount of seasoning, they just weren't the size we had hoped. We get to the twelfth crab and it's rotten. I take it inside and say hey I've got a bad one here (this kind of thing happens) and can you replace it, oh and I know you're low on crabs I'll take 1/2 dozen raw oysters in it's place if you don't have any crabs left to give out. Since I'm paying about $7 a crab this isn't something you just let slide. The bimbo girl at the register just starred at me with a blank face like she'd never had to formulate an apologetic sentence in her life. She's probably had her yacht club daddy speaking for her her entire life. So the guy from the kitchen comes out and takes a look at it and smells the insides. He then proceeds to try to tell me that it's just "different" and that is smells perfectly fine to him.
Now let me tell you, I've been eating crabs me entire life, I have eaten hundreds, if not thousands, of crabs. I know what a bad crab looks and smells like and I can assure you that this was a bad crab. You would jerk your head away from it after smelling it. So i look at him and say "no, this is not a good crab, not by my book". The look he gave me back was a mixture of hate and disdain. He then proceeds to snatch the crab out of my hand and slam dunk it into the trash can. Then hands me a cold medium. We ate the last crab and left, never to return.
Sometimes people say customer service is dead. While I don't think this is true as a whole, I can assure you that aside from the friendly and helpful busboy who checked on us several times, customer service is most certainly DEAD at Wild Country Seafood. To treat a paying customer (at that point I'd spent over $100) the way they treated me that day is beyond anything I would ever put up with again.
Thanks Wile Country, you lost a returning customer that day who was in the midst of creating a traditions of coming to you each May for crabs. I hope you enjoy eating your "different" crabs all...
Read moreFairly friendly young men working there, the fresh crabs (paid for medium dozen female and they were as meaty as your average large), and the hot (but a bit slow) hush puppies give this place a decent rating.
-2 stars for having closed (due to Coronavirus) bathrooms when my wife really had to go. I mean, come on, there are two bottles of hand sanitizer for customers and we carry hand wipes for that kind of situation- I understand the concern when you are in a plaza right down the street from a Mickey D’s or a ROFO with open restrooms but in Eastport ...
Well a dude could get away with pissing behind the model sailboat or even the crab statue at the nearby park by the Museum, but if you have a lady in your party make sure you make a pit stop for Number 1 on Ritchie Highway or something before heading here. In a pinch, you can go to the Latitude and Longitude gift shop on the other side of the Maritime Museum and make a deal with the lady inside if you have money to burn from hustling night shift like Mrs. Johnson :@)
Another tip - come into Eastport via Aris T Allen Blvd, avoid the traffic in Downtown Annapolis, park on Chesapeake Ave, and enjoy your stroll around...
Read moreWow, what a great find to just walk a few steps over here after a nice boat ride to the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse from the maritime museum (definitely a little hard to find and only a couple of parking spots). Not fancy at all (no view of anything but the parking lot), but they have some really nice tables setup outside with umbrellas and condiments and napkins and everything was very clean. I will also say, for those who are used to eating seafood outside and the instant flies that normally find you, we saw hardly any flies while eating which was nice. The inside has all the fresh seafood on display and a cooler with some drinks (but no inside tables). You order (most of the menu is fried) and then wait outside at your table and they bring your food. We probably waited 20 minutes for our order, but it was worth the wait. Probably the best hush puppies we have had in years (with actual corn kernels in them). The fries were excellent beer batter crisp fried. Prices were very reasonable (but seafood is inherently more expensive than normal food), and we were very pleased and would be happy to come back the next time we are...
