I feel bad that I was not impressed.
The lady who took my order had white/gray hair. She didn't have a lick of personality and basically grunted through the ordering process. That sucked all of the energy out of wanting to be there and made it much less enjoyable to be there.
After reading all of the reviews and getting positive feedback from coworkers... I was ready to get down with the burger frenzy. I ordered three burgers, and two of the burgers were special request burgers from my coworkers. All three burgers were cheeseburgers. My cheeseburger, I added an egg. I found out they do not offer avocado, which left me slightly disappointed. I asked for extra raw onion, and after unwrapping my burger, I found that they serve diced onions and not whole cut slices.
The burger was not impressive, and maybe that's because I've been to so many different burger spots, and the fact that where I live, in the Inland Empire, independent burger joints are all over the place. A good example is Burger Point in San Bernardino on Mill Street. It is one of many independent places that make some damn good burgers and better tasting to me. Now, this is just a comparative opinion and not a pot shot to Hazel's.
When I am visiting Antioch, I don't eat at too many places and usually just visit the local In N Out. I gave Hazel's a try and wasn't impressed with the service or food, but I will come back and try the Wiley Burger I have read so much about. Maybe that will be the impressive burger. We shall see when I make the second visit.
I realize this is long-winded and probably had more dialog than I needed to make a point. However, I gave four stars, and that's not bad. Hazel's could probably use an actual HVAC system instead of those wall mounted fans that can collect dust on the blades. It wasn't comfortable in the dining room at all but I am normally warm and that's my problem.
I hope anyone reading this realizes that this is a good burger spot, and they can see it is highly recommended and a town favorite. I just happened to be that guy who isn't raving or excited about the place.
If that lady behind the counter had a welcoming personality and smiled, maybe the burger would have...
Read moreHazel's used to be my go to Hamburger spot. It was the best ever since I could remember back in Elementary School! When you went to Hazel's you knew exactly what you were going to get EXCELLENT BURGER'S. Everything they served up was so good, but the Burger's were out of this world. The deco inside was retro. All the fun memorabilia inside and the paintings on the outside GONE! It was home to everyone here in Antioch. I remember when the new owner had just bought it He Promised me that they weren't going to change not one thing about the food. NOT TRUE! I DONT REMEMBER HAZEL BURGER'S LOOKING LIKE THIS! The meat was falling apart! The whole thing was SLOP! Look at the tomatoe they served me! You cant tell the onions from the lettuce. I believe The Hazel burger use to come with cheese on each hamburger patty , I only got cheese on one patty. She told me that would be extra to have cheese on each patty. They put both patty's on top of each other instead of being separated by the extra bun in the middle. It all was just a mess. And wait for it........DANNY IS GONE! Danny has been working there ever since I started going to HAZEL'S! It just wasn't the Hazel's that I and Everyone here in Antioch and all around the area have been use to! It doesn't have that home feel to it anymore. What a shame. For over 30 year's you could always count on Hazel's being one of the Best Burgers ! The new owner promised not to change one thing about Hazel's , then he went and changed EVERYTHING!...
Read moreIf you haven't had Hazel's, I employ you to go. It is an institution of Antioch. Went there last month. We went right after kayaking for a few hours on the delta and were pretty hungry. I've had Hazel's before but never ordered the Willie burger. Me and my husband shared one and it was enough to share with 2 other people. It was really a really good burger, exceeded expectations. I want to note how good the customer service is. Since we were kayaking I didn't bring my wallet with me and totally forgot until after I ordered. So my husband went home to get it (we live like a minute away) They were cool with it and even let me have our drink while I waited. While I was there, I overheard another costumer stating that the cheesesteak sandwich was the best he's had in years only second to that place in Philly that was one of the original cheese steak places so there you have it. I'll say it one more time....If you haven't had Hazel's, get it. It is an...
