Tony's Tavern — Restaurant in Athens

Tonight, I experienced blatant racism from the bartender at this bar. When I first approached to place an order, she rudely told me to wait for sex seconds and said if I was just there for water, I could serve myself and walked away immediately. I waited for nearly another 10 minutes, and when she finally returned, I made it clear I was not there for water—I wanted to order a beer. Her response? She claimed I wasn’t in the line, even though there was no line, and everyone else was placing orders where they stood, without issue. When I asked her where this so-called line was, she dismissed me again and walked off. I’m so pissed off and frustrated, I followed her to the other side of bar she walked off and repeatedly said I wanted to order a beer before she reluctantly took my order. I paid the same price as everyone else but the treatment I received was completely different - her behavior was completely discriminatory and disrespectful and it’s clear to me she was being racist. Was carded last night (no big deal) until the bartender told me that I wasn't me and stole my card. When I pulled out my student ID, he took that as well. As I pull out my credit card to again, confirm that I'm myself, he smugly told me he would confiscate that too if he could.

After I give him one final chance to work this out with me, the bartender laughs and walks away so I called the police. When the policewoman arrived she quickly proved me to be who I said I was and forced the bartender to give me back my IDs. When the embarrassing ordeal was over, I got no apology from the owner who was seemingly drunk standing nearby. The bartender of course didn't make any effort to right his wrong.

This disheartens me as there hadn't been a Tuesday in months that I didn't miss Jazz night, and I quite honestly don't feel right about visiting Tony's anymore after this. I'm from a small town and we handle things personally, here at Tony's you get ignored and discriminated upon.

RACIST bartender who doesn’t know the difference between work and play. If you’re any type of minority, the extra wide, tall, I guess “woman” bartender purposely make you wait 10-20 minutes to be attended, even if she’s already attended everyone, even if it’s nearly empty. She rather talk than attend customers. Or she will refuse to serve you if you ask if you may be served (even politely) and give you an attitude/kick you out because she’s “having a bad day”. It’s 2023, this shouldn’t be how things are. Not should it have ever been that way before. However there’s a male bartender there who treats everyone the same and has great customer service. That one lady though has no business bartending. And as a former bartender there’s supposed to be a 3 second grule when a customer walks in and sits down, you’re supposed to greet them. She’s rude, self entitled, clearly doesn’t understand the difference between business and personal and very obviously and blatantly...
