A Taste of Home: My Curbside Experience at Honey from the Rock Café
Looking for some genuine Southern comfort food during a weekday lunch rush in Augusta, I decided to try Honey from the Rock Café, knowing they offer convenient curbside pickup. I'd heard great things about their reputation for soulful cooking, and I was definitely in the mood for something hearty and satisfying to enjoy at home.
Ordering & Pickup Experience
Placing my online order was straightforward. When I arrived at the designated pickup time, the process was smooth and efficient. Staff brought the order out promptly to the car, ensuring everything was packed securely. Even through the brief curbside interaction, the staff were friendly and conveyed that same sense of warmth you hope for from a beloved local spot. While I didn't experience the indoor atmosphere, the efficiency and friendliness of the pickup process were notable. The delicious aromas wafting from the bag were already promising!
The Menu & My Order
Even for takeout, the menu offered a tempting array of Southern and soul food classics visible online or relayed over the phone. Fried chicken, baked chicken, smothered pork chops, oxtails (a special that day!), fried fish – the gang was all there. And the sides! Collard greens, mac & cheese, candied yams, black-eyed peas, cabbage, potato salad, green beans, rice & gravy, cornbread... making a decision was still tough.
I decided to go with the Baked Chicken Plate. It felt like a solid choice to gauge their home-style cooking. For my sides, I couldn't resist the Mac & Cheese and the Candied Yams. Of course, a piece of Cornbread and a Sweet Tea were mandatory accompaniments.
The Food Experience (Enjoyed at Home)
Unpacking the food at home, everything was still wonderfully hot and smelled incredible.
Baked Chicken: This was fantastic. Two generous pieces (a leg and thigh) were perfectly cooked. The skin was nicely seasoned, and the meat underneath was fall-off-the-bone tender and juicy. It tasted like it had been slow-cooked with care and love – comfort food at its finest.
Mac & Cheese: Creamy, cheesy, and clearly baked. It held up well during transport and had that slightly firm top layer giving way to pure comfort underneath. Exactly what you hope for.
Candied Yams: Sweet, tender, and swimming in that delicious syrupy glaze, likely with hints of cinnamon and maybe nutmeg. They were soft but held their shape – pure nostalgic sweetness and a perfect pairing with the chicken.
Cornbread: A simple, slightly sweet, moist square. Ideal for soaking up the yam syrup or just enjoying on its own.
Sweet Tea: Properly brewed Southern sweet tea – refreshing and sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. A perfect cool counterpoint to the rich food.
The portions were very generous; it was a truly satisfying, flavorful plate of food, even enjoyed away from the restaurant itself.
Service & Price
The curbside service was efficient and friendly. The ordering process was easy, and the pickup was seamless. Price-wise, it felt very reasonable for the quality and quantity. My plate with two sides, cornbread, and a drink landed comfortably in the $12-$15 range, which is excellent value for a meal this substantial and well-prepared, especially with the convenience of pickup.
Overall
Honey from the Rock Café absolutely delivered on its promise of authentic, delicious Southern comfort food, perfectly suited for a fantastic takeout meal. It’s the real deal – unpretentious, focused on serving up soulful dishes that taste like they came from a cherished family recipe book, and offering it with convenient, friendly curbside service. If you're in Augusta and craving food that warms you from the inside out to enjoy wherever you please, this place is a must-try. I'm already planning my next curbside order to sample those...
Read moreI have passed by this place tons of times and, due to the short and weekday only hours had never been able to stop in. On a whim, I decided, since I had the time to go ahead and have a whirl. I am not prone to believe strangers when they say a restaurant is the best because a) their taste buds are off or b) it's a little overblown.
Well, I am proud to report that this restaurant is one of the better preparer of fried chicken in the area. I was chasing every last crumb of the batter to savor. Since it was a splurge, I got the small portion plate to save money. Thinking it wouldn't fill me up, I was wrong. And I could have made a meal out of the broccoli casserole alone. The fried green tomatoes were okay, but the jalapeno cornbread muffins were seasoned with just the right touch of spicy. And every employee welcomed me and made a big deal out of it being my first time. It's nice to get service from people you feel like...
Read moreFood excellent, nice establishment, usually very nice waitress, but my waitress today seem like she didn't want to be there, I placed my food on the table that I wanted to sit at, she say, sit somewhere else because that table is dirty, I said they all are dirty,(it's lunch time) so she cleaned the one SHE wanted me to sit at, but I sat at the dirty one that I wanted, that she could have cleaned, then I ask for hot sauce, she THREW it on the table, I needed a straw, waited until I seen another worker and asked her for the straw, but this rude waitress, bring it throw it on the table as well, so I placed $5 on the table like I was leaving it as a tip, she became nicer, I nicely wrote a note and left one penny there, because that's what she earned. I looked for a name tag, but she was not wearing one. She's in the wrong business with that attitude. Other than her, this is a great...
