From my experience, the quality of the coffee at Coffee Cartel is decent. However, I think it is important to share an upsetting interaction I had with the owner. To be fair, he has previously been open to feedback about the strength of the cold brew. I think the feedback I shared at my last visit may have (unintentionally) hit a nerve, and he didn't respond professionally or appropriately.
Here was my experience: My 16oz cold brew with a tbsp. of half and half and sugar was rung up to $7. That total felt high to me, especially when I looked at the list price of the item. I inquired about it, and he explained that they charge extra for anything additional you add to the coffee (e.g. cream and sugar). I responded that this total it about $2 higher than the same request at most other local coffee shops, as I'm almost never charged for a dash of half and half and sugar. I acknowledged that I know margins are thin in the business, and that of course it is his prerogative to charge however he sees fit. I emphasized this is just an alternative perspective to consider. He proceeded to raise his voice (almost yelling) and lecture me in a condescending way about how the basics of business operations state that my coffee is inherently more expensive than someone who keeps their coffee black, so of course he charges more for my coffee. However, he doesn't charge for packets of stevia because it is so cheap. I asked if he could provide packets of sugar because those are also cheap. He stated they don't carry packets of sugar because "simple syrup is better." As I am being lectured on the fundamentals of business, I am wondering if he is considering that other fundamentals of business are to familiarize yourself with industry norms, assess local competition, and consistently respond graciously to customer feedback. From my experience, most coffee shops don't charge for simple syrup (sugar + water) and/or carry packets of sugar, and only charge extra for alternative milk options (oat milk, soy milk, etc.). To end the conversation, I informed him that I felt he was being rude to me and it ended awkwardly.
I was excited for this coffee trailer to open down the street from me. Even though the cold brew price was generally higher than the competition (my usual order), I still would have continued to go because I love supporting local and am particularly passionate about coffee. However, after the interaction, I won't be returning. There are other quality coffee shops nearby that maintain a gracious attitude towards their customer base (and are a bit less...
Read moreSo glad this place is finally on Google! Coffee Cartel has been my go to neighborhood coffee spot since it opened in March. It is owned by a couple who genuinely want you to have the best cup of coffee. My usual order is the iced lavender vanilla almond milk latte. If lavender vanilla isn’t your jam, they have a huge spread of organic syrups as well as a variety of milk options. When I need an extra caffeine boost, their cold brew formula is the best I’ve had! Coffee Cartel is located by a donut shop and taco truck, making it the perfect morning pit stop for coffee and breakfast. The logo is also really cool. I bought a T-shirt which is also high quality and I love supporting local Austin businesses. Long story short, give it a try. I know you’ll...
Read moreI've been driving past for months and finally stopped by - and delighted that I did! I was instantly impressed by the friendly, welcoming service; you feel like a regular even if it’s your first time.
I ordered a cappuccino and it was perfectly done. Most places drown it in milk, but not here— they nailed the classic cappuccino ratio. Rich espresso, velvety foam, and just the right amount of milk. And to top it off, a charming sprinkle of cinnamon that added the perfect finishing touch.
If you’re tired of the milky messes disguised as cappuccinos, this place is a must. Excellent coffee, made by people who know what...
