This cozy café, with its charming patio seating and a tattoo parlor nestled in the backyard, offers a unique vibe that’s hard to find elsewhere. The drink menu is a highlight, featuring fun coffee and cocktail options that cater to a variety of tastes. I had the Touch Grass- matcha with cinnamon and honey- and it tasted divine. While I'm not vegan, I had heard great things about their vegan tacos, so I decided to try "The Twins" and "El Rey Tofish." To my surprise, the flavors were reminiscent of familiar fast-food favorites—The Twins had a taste strikingly similar to Taco Bell, while El Rey Tofish reminded me of McDonald’s fish sandwich. Initially, I found it a bit underwhelming, but upon reflection, I see the appeal: these dishes offer a satisfying vegan alternative when you’re craving that fast-food fix you might otherwise miss. It’s not gourmet dining, or authentic taco flavors, but for those moments when you want comfort food with a twist, it hits the spot.

I remote-work from Barrett's and heard the staff talking about Double Trouble a couple months ago and have been looking forward to checking it out. It's more of a coffee/food/bar vibe (in comparison to Barrett's, which only does Coffee). The menu is all vegan, but tastes great. The coffee if all from Barrett's, so if you like the coffee there you'll likely equally the Coffee at Double Trouble. It looks like they are still working on the outside (backyard), but it seems like Double Trouble will eventually be a indoor/outdoor bar with a live music stage for small concerts. The location is along "downtown" North Loop, which has been transitioning to a pretty cool restaurant bar scene over the last several years, and Double Trouble is a nice addition to the area. The music selection while I was there was pretty awesome throwback hip hop. It's been a while since I've heard Tupac, Biggie and 50 Cent 🤣

I can already tell this place will be in my regular weekend rotation. It combines many of Austin’s most beloved and tasty ventures - Barrett’s coffee, the Vegan Nom’s food, and Zucchini Kill pastries. All of these are individually amazing, but being able to get all in one place is a special treat. The staff at Double Trouble is welcoming and knowledgeable, able to help you decide what to get as there are many tempting options. The tacos are big and filling so one was enough for me (although I wanted to try many). The coffee is delicious, as Barrett’s always is. The atmosphere rocks. Inside they have multiple tables (with access to plugs for those needing to wfh). Great playlists playing overhead to put you in a good mood. The back patio is spacious and inviting. Can’t wait to come back!

I had previously left a different negative review regarding their split from Vegan Nom, but I decided to give DT another shot. I have recently enjoyed their weeknight events like Singo, and I appreciate that they’ve hosted some cool community events like Sunbird fest. They also have a great patio and overall fun vibes and I want to support the business. However, I had a really disappointing experience tonight.

I was up to order and was asking if an item on the VEGAN menu was also GF. Nothing is labeled gf, the staff member didn’t know, but offered to ask the chef. I then asked if the queso on the dish, which was labeled vegan, was indeed vegan queso. No! Then why is it on the vegan menu or at the very least not called out as vegetarian not vegan?? This is unacceptable. You are treating customers with dietary restrictions as a complete afterthought. After the vegan nom drama, this type of service is so unfortunate.

After all this, they still sent me the non vegan dish (I ordered two tacos instead of that, didn’t check my bill to see if I was charged for all three but probably was). The tacos…yeah, not good. The black beans were fine, but the tofu and potatoes were bland as hell and soggy. C’mon yall…

Lastly, I was super excited for their screening of Elvira, but they didn’t advertise on the posters that we’d be getting a super cool drag show beforehand! I was so bummed that I didn’t have cash to tip. That just made me feel bad for the queen — she was awesome. Also, the picnic tables should have been turned horizontally I think for better seating. Lots of us were craning our necks to see.

Hope yall fix the vegan menu mess and educate your staff on dietary restrictions - I’m not the first person to have these issues. I’d be happy to update my review once you LABEL THE DAMN...

This place clearly has some management/business issues, and I won't be going back until it's clear they're sorted.

This place opened up as a partnership with Vegan Nom, but for some reason, that seems to have ended, and not on good terms.

This place now serves meat, cheese, eggs, a full omnivore menu, and their online ordering system doesn't make it clear exactly what you'll get. That's why they have a bunch of random items that say "NOT VEGAN" in all capital letters. Most normal restaurants just say what items are vegan, not what items aren't. If they want to change up their business strategy and marketing angle, that's their prerogative, but they tried to be sneaky about the transition and sneaky about the reasons why they were switching from a plant-based menu.

This isn't a plant-based restaurant anymore, it's just a regular taco place with some vegan options. That's fine and all, but the reasons why, and the way that the transition happened just doesn't sit well with me. I don't want to order something I think is plant-based on Monday and turns out it's meat on Friday. I don't want to accidentally consume eggs or cheese because of a poorly labeled menu and questionable kitchen practices. If you want to have vegan options at your restaurant, then you should redo the menu with a vegan section and fill that with tacos you created, rather than "borrowed" from Vegan Nom. Shady business practices.

I don't want Double Trouble. I want Vegan Nom and Barrett's. Now, seems I'll...

Unfortunately the owners don't seem to care about food quality or customer experience. Don't recommend this place. Unfortunate as it's a great location for a place with amazing food & drinks. This is not it. Won't be going back.

Update: When I first visited Double Trouble multiple times as they opened (was following for months in anticipation) it was a warm atmosphere & the food was great despite them being super busy. Recently in multiple times going the service was awful, the drink (espresso martini) was lacking especially for a coffee shop & the food didn't match what I previously experienced. Specifically, the employees stood around talking while there was no salsa available for the food which was otherwise dry. They ran out of water & though they said they'd replace it didn't for maybe 20 minutes. On a hot TX day idk how that happens. Today I remembered to write a review for this place & the sister company. I've been to both recently as I live close to both & decided to write reviews for both. If accusing me for having a "beef" instead of being a dissatisfied customer is what the response is, what makes them think I'll be...
