While I sure have not ventured too far into menu I do have some favorites. Of course if you visit a place called borrego, you may want to try the lamb plate with corn. Corn tortillas are house made. Flour no. Then there is their stewed chicken, the best I've ever had anywhere. You can get this chicken on anything. Enchiladas, tacos, burritos, tostadas etc. All the sauces taste great. My favorite is chipotle. You can really smell and taste the smoke used to roast the chillies. So basically I like chicken enchiladas with chipotle sauce. OMG! Also the carne guisada with corn tortillas. Sauce is thick and tasty and the carne is cooked to perfection. Tortilla soup is really good because they use the corn tortillas pieces on it and that great chicken. It's great on cool/cold days. If you like mole, they have a dark rich mole with just enough sweetness. Probably from jar but thats OK. The mole chicken enchiladas are fantastic. Finally, although the refried beans are almost always on the spot great, you may consider replacing them with borracho beans which have tons of flavor. I'm sure there is plenty more but these are my go to faves...

It's a funny story how I found this place. I head to work from 71 to south I really wanted breakfast tacos, but I could not find any when I asked my google phone, at least none that were on the way. So I decided I would choose McDonald's which is right across the street from this place. Needless to say, the line was long, I said never mind to Mcdonalds, attempted a U-turn on congress back on to Ben white, my attempt sort of failed because my car ended up facing directly in front of this restaurant. I thought "wait a minute, this is a Mexican restaurant-they HAVE to have breakfast tacos!" They did, and THE TACOS ARE DELICIOUS! I AM SO BLESSED THAT GOD PLANTED ME QUITE LITERALLY IN FRONT OF THIS STORE. NOW I CAN GET THEM HERE ON THE WAY TO WORK! Hot sauce went great with these tacos-YUM! cant wait to try their food for dinner. Being a Mexican myself the Trochy's "Taco" place was just not cutting it! (Oh. And when they have Selena hanging in their shop-you just know its...

The food is good here; however, BEWARE! They do not give the table an itemized bill therefore the girl at the front register adds up everything- I made a note of about how much my bill would be, and it was obvious that I was overcharged. I mentioned the overcharges- as it wasn't the first time- and the corrections were deducted- shaved off $15 from my bill. I won't go back.

I went back to El Borrego a few years after this post was written and it was an entirely different experience. The food was fantastic - hot plates- it looked good- the service was impeccable- the manager was going around the tables making sure the patrons were all happy with everything. AND paying the bill was an easy and reflected exactly what we had eaten... not like the previous time where you go up to the cashier and she acts like she guessing what things cost. I do not know if they changed management- they must have because the service all around...

Austin local and Mexican citizen here, I came in strictly for the barbacoa (gordita) and while it was an 8/10 (Gordita was bland but the table salt and salsa made up for it, I added a generous amount of salsa every bite) the whole experience could’ve been better. Dirty menus and no chips for the pricy lunch plates was disappointing. We ate as fast as we could since it was a bit slow and boring inside. If you’re a family of 10+, the space will accommodate you but most plates were around $14. My Italian American fiancé got 2 chorizo bean cheese tacos on flour and while he enjoyed them, the tortillas wouldn’t pass my quality test. I won’t be coming back to dine in but would consider them to order over the phone and pick up barbacoa tacos or order the pound of barbacoa when in a rush. It was perfectly proportioned with low amounts of fat

A humble little spot next to I35 with a lot to offer. Parking can be a bit tricky, but I managed to find a spot without too much trouble. The food was excellent—everything was fresh and flavorful. The staff stood out for their friendliness and consistently polite service. The breakfast tacos were generously sized and satisfying. I tried the menudo con patas, and honestly, it's the best I’ve had in the Austin area. Rich, authentic, and perfectly seasoned. If you're a fan of delicious, traditional Mexican food, this place is definitely worth a visit.

There was no wait to sit. The music was nice and we were promptly approached for drinks and given chips and salsa. The salsa was fantastic! I got a cheese Enchilada plate and my boyfriend had Heuvos rancheros and a chicharon with bean taco. The green salsa is so good. Everything was delicious. Clean bathroom and the cutest little chandelier in the main seating area. Our Lyft driver recommended this place to us and I highly recommend it. As a San Antonian, we'll be back the next time we visit Austin.
