Evangeline Cafe — Restaurant in Austin

The food here sucks is the best way to put it plainly. I ordered the gold band plate & so did my husband. The sauce literally tasted like someone mixed red wine with milk & poured it over the pasta. The pasta was a small portion & the shrimp tasted like something from a frozen dinner box. The food was basic & disgusting but what wasn’t okay to sit through was the quality of service. As soon as we walked in no one greeted us or told us where to sit so we seated ourselves. Then a girl with black pants & a baby blue shirt with dark brown & blonde in her hair in a ponytail came and asked us what we wanted to drink after 10 minutes of sitting down. We told her what we wanted then she left, didn’t ask if we wanted appetizers or if we knew what we wanted to eat yet.So after another 10-15 minutes we were ready but she didn’t check on us so when I saw her I said excuse me we are ready to order, she walked past me then turned around as she was walking away & said very rudely “I’ll be right with you!!”. she eventually came back & asked us what we wanted & we both chose the gold band plate that comes w/bread. She arrived w/our plates & no bread with them even though it’s included with the plate & says so on the menu. When I ask her about it she said oh yeah we’re no longer serving this w/the bread but if you want some I can get it but it will be $4.00 extra. (Why charge extra for something that says it’s included? I would have chose something else). So we’re half way through our meal & still no bread, and she kept passing by our table but didn’t check on us or refill drinks or offer extra napkins, when she saw me looking at the kitchen window she realized she forgot our bread & went to get it. My husband wanted to cancel the bread order at this point. The bread we got was the size for a toddler lol it was laughable. The place wasn’t busy for her to give crappy service and to be giving ugly looks. The music was too loud I couldn’t hear my husband conversate, the food was trash and the waitress and her service today 3/22/24 sucked horribly. Needless to say she did not receive a tip from us which she was laughing about with her coworker as she was cleaning a table outside. I definitely don’t recommend this place at all. Most of the waitresses here were not friendly or welcoming, they all need to work on that if they want to attract more customers. I came here because I saw one tik tok video recommending it but This is definitely some place I wouldn’t recommend to anyone on tik tok or anywhere else for that matter. And you can see in my picture how dry the pasta looks, now imagine mixing red wine & milk...

I was really excited to try this place, it has been on my list to go to for quite some time. I live up North so I rarely find myself down South.

However, I made a special trip down South to get some Cajun food. I'm beyond in love with Boudin, so of course I ordered the Boudin. It was good, I feel like that is hard to mess up on. If you have it on your menu for a Cajun restaurant you already winning with me. I got the burger lunch special though on the recommendation on the server and I definitely do not have the same idea on it as her. It was probably my mistake to not get something cajun here, but it was a very terrible burger. It was dry and just not appetizing. Seemed like a frozen patty to me. I would not recommend you go eat that. The fries were just as bad too, so stay away from both. I also ordered a side of onion rings and it was okay, they are like a take on shoestring onion rings, not bad but also not the best onion rings I've ever eaten. I wouldn't say go out of your way for those.

However, the dessert is what is giving this place three stars and the service. Although the server and I didn't feel the same way on the burger, she was extremely nice and friendly and attentive. Back to the dessert, the Pistolette, is bomb! You must get that for sure if you find yourself here!! It was amazing! Totally worth the wait for that.

This place is located in a strip mall so you have to fight other shop goers for parking spots, but it shouldn't be too bad, the place did get very crowded for a weekend lunch, so you might or might not have a wait. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The decor is...

This is a long review so let me just state that I cannot recommend anyone eat at Evangaline Café at this time. We hadn't eaten at Evangeline in quite awhile and I decided I wanted some Cajun for my birthday, so my wife picked up an order on her way home from work. What we got looked and tasted like it had set under a heat lamp all day. The jambalaya was dry and bland with the only real flavor coming when you bit into one of the two small slices of sausage. The crawfish pie had a crust that was greasy and so tough you had to use a serrated knife to cut through it. My meal also came with a cup of gumbo, which unfortunately had either been setting to long, or the roux was burnt either way it really wasn’t any good. My daughter’s cheeseburger came with no cheese and was so tough and dry that she threw most of it away. My daughter tried her fries and then tossed them stating that “next day reheated fries form IHOP are better”. My other daughter supposedly got the black drum, but it was not a filet as promised, but rather chunks of something flavorless mixed into white rice. The chicken fried steak my son ordered was also tough, soggy, and greasy, but at least the chicken fried chicken my wife ordered was only greasy so she was able to pick the breading off and eat it. The best part of the entire meal was the bread pudding, but it also was bland and dry with not enough sauce. I don’t know if they were having an off day, or if this is their new normal, but all I can say with certainty is that what my family received...
