If I could title this review, it would be "A Steady Decline."
The first time I ate food from here was December of 2019. I distinctly remember because it was my wife's birthday and then a few months later the pandemic hit. The food that evening was phenomenal. I mean, it was one of the best Thai meals I've ever had, and I've eaten at a lot of Thai restaurants. I ordered the P41 Special Panang Beef Curry. The beef was served in large, incredibly tender chunks. It had clearly been cooking for many hours. It was packed with flavor. I was ready to call Madam Mam's the best Asian Restaurant in Austin, and a serious contender for best restaurant full stop. Every meal we've had from there since then has been a slow decline.
In the early months of the pandemic, our neighbors joined with us to oder a large order. We ate sitting in lawn chairs in our alley. I ordered the same P41 special. The meat wasn't in chunks. It was thin slices of beef. There were similar flavors, but the texture and experience was considerably diminished.
And it's been like that consistently. We still order from them, mostly because there isn't much else around South Austin that's quality.
But tonight was another major step in the decline. We ordered two orders of the Pad Thai. Both were enormous portions. I'm a big guy with a big appetite, and it was way more than I could eat. But the problem was the proportions. It was like 90% noodles, 7% vegetables, and 3% meat (pork in our case). There was such a measly amount of pork. It's hard to believe that I spent $28 on two orders of what amounted to noodles with a bit of sauce. We had maybe 4 ounces of pork between the two orders combined.
I'm not one who normally writes a lot of Google Reviews. But this has been disappointing. This may have been our last visit to Madam Mam's. Someone needs to open another quality Thai place in south Austin. We'd be the...
Read moreOne of my go to restaurants! Madam Mam's has only ever met or exceeded my expectations!
The menu has a plethora of both authentic Thai cuisine and more Americanized takes on dishes! All of it worth trying and all incredibly delicious. My favorites are the Amazing Thailand Wings, Pad Ga-Prao, Eastern Pad Thai, Street Pad Thai/Bankrupt Noodles, and Guay Teaw Tom Yum. They all have an incredible balance of flavors come in generous portions, and the spicy food is actually spicy!
At the South Brodie Ln. location there is a waitress named Su, and she is phenomenal! She is the sweetest, most helpful, upbeat, and personable waitress in all of Austin! Su has learned our names, knows our orders, and is always a joy to catch up with while we're there! I would eat at any restaurant where Su works, just to have her as my waitress! She is second to none!
The atmosphere is also delightful! Similar to many Thai restaurants it has a relaxing and beautiful interior style, but Madam Mam's takes it even further. The Brodie location has all these unique bird cages adoring the ceiling, large stone/brick columns, cultural masks with info plaks, and let me tell you the playlist they've got going is awesome! Jazz fusion, spa, electronica, and all types of perfectly fitting music set the best mood. I always have Shazam ready on my phone for the next great track.
My only gripe is the to-go containers. They use styrofoam and plastic which leads to so much needless waste. Please please switch to something more sustainable. I would order additional meals to-go each time if y'all used something more sustainable.
I could keep gushing about Madam Mam's but I will simply keep enjoying it and urge others to...
Read moreThis review will be a little bias as some of the owners of this establishment are my neighbors, but it will be a true testament to the food and well as the quality of their character.
In all honesty I didn’t think I liked Thai food all that much, after eating at a few establishments. It’s mostly because I had no idea what I was ordering.
I had heard of Madam Mam’s before but hadn’t given it much thought. After talking to my neighbors one of them gave me advice on what to order as a novice Thai Food eater.
I gave it a shot and wow! It was amazing! I didn’t even tell them I was going. The quality of the food and the service are unmatched as far as I am concerned. Very impressed.
They are also very gracious leaders and supportive in our community. I had just mentioned that my child wasn’t feeling well on social media and they were at my doorstep, not only with my favorites but also with specially made items for my child who is a plain Jane picky eater. They serve our school and teachers as well, never being asked always just out of the kindness of their hearts. That right there is just as important as the quality of their food which I might add is very authentic after learning more about it.
If you haven’t tried them or are new to the area I highly recommend Madam Mam’s I believe their quality and service will speak for itself and you will definitely be impressed.
Side note: if you don’t know what to order or are a novice to Thai Food, the Beef Fried rice is an...
