Sorry y'all this place is not great. I had never been, but let me share my experience. When we arrived, we were told to sit anywhere we like, it's a bar atmosphere with barstools and the sushi chefs in the middle. We ordered handrolls, nigiri sushi, and sashimi and while the portions of the fish were good, the rice was mixed with matcha and ponzu sauce, which made it sweet and I almost spit out my 1st bite as it tasted like a spoonful of sugar in my rice and I was not expecting the sweetness. It was not ever mentioned on the menu either.
The sushi chefs never engaged with any guests, 2 ladies with hats on never looked up and I'm not sure if they understood English. When I asked if the soy sauce was low sodium, the lady I spoke to looked confused and responded, "one minute". There's more, regarding bad service, but I'm just wanting to get to this point. For the price we paid, the food, service, and overall experience was underwelming. We will never go back. They missed the mark. Handrolls weren't even rolled in a cone shape, they rolled them like open-ended burritos, 1 bite and the bits fall out the other side. As a concept, in theory, this place would be a lot of fun, but its poor execution from staffing to overall customer experience is lacking and the overpriced sushi and weird rice literally left a bad taste in my mouth.
Oh and to top it off, the waiter seated a large group right next to us, which made no sense considering the rest of the bar was open. It was very awkward and the group asked to move down a few seats because they were also uncomfortable. So, my advice is to pass this one up, there are better more affordable...
Read moreOk so this was a wild experience. The atmosphere is incredible, the service is great ,however, the price of such small and simple rolls is completely insane. This place is more expensive than uchi or lucky robot and gives you a fraction amount of the food. I really wanted to like this place but I was starving and given a 2 bite roll for like 14 dollars. The toro I ordered was somehow frozen in the middle and just the portion to cost ratio is completely insane. I love sushi . I wanted to love this sushi. Man I feel so ripped off I just can't even think about ever coming here again. I legitimately cannot understand the pricing on these rolls. They didn't even add anything else to the rolls. It's literally just like a tablespoon of fish and a tablespoon of rice wrapped up in some loose seaweed. Even the side of seaweed I ordered for i think 10 bucks was about a tablespoon of seaweed. I'm so mad I just spent over 100 bucks here and we then had to stop by another restaurant to finish feeding our family. Man I wanted to love this place so badly but it just made it too difficult. If they added some variety and color to their rolls and literally halved the price on every menu item I would say this is a great place but save your money. It's cheaper to go to a Michelin rated sushi restaurant for double the amount of the food. This was just insane. Again. Fantastic service, awesome atmosphere but man they need to...
Read moreThis sushi restaurant offers a unique experience with bar stools instead of regular tables. I assume the owner is trying to mimic the Japanese dining style, but in Austin, the main consumer group consists of families and groups of friends. This is very different from Japan, where it's common to eat alone. For any group of people, I believe they won’t return after one visit because sitting on a stool with no back support becomes uncomfortable quickly. It’s also difficult to chat since you can’t sit face-to-face. The location is in an area surrounded by houses, and the Canyon Creek area is mostly made up of families, not singles. If the owner wants to adopt this model, it might work better in a downtown area, where there are more office workers.
As for the food, it’s pretty average and not worth the price. Sushi, being a cold dish, should offer a more distinct flavor, but after spending a decent amount of money, I found the taste to be underwhelming, and I still left feeling hungry. I tried a set of 4 rolls, and to be honest, they all tasted very similar. I couldn’t really notice any significant difference between them. The seaweed wrapping around the rolls was overpowering and affected the overall taste. Offering rolls wrapped in seaweed as a set just doesn’t seem to make much sense to me. Most first-time visitors would likely leave with a negative impression...
