Breakfast finally outside. From the griddle, three pancakes (meat does not come with these) and a side of bacon ($4.25); “Eggs Served Your Way” – two scrambled, home fries, bacon and rye toast; four mugs of coffee, two each, serve yourself inside Green Mountain thermos station. Pleasant new staff. Eggs were just right. The bacon was forgotten but brought out when I mentioned this to staff. My partner would have passed on the colored shots on his pancakes. Good home fries.
Returning for four take-out sandwiches in Jan. it was good to see the indoor seating. Tables are spaced or with screens between them. We got two chicken salads, a Reuben with corned beef and a Pinchot Stackamore Club. All came with a pickle and bag of potato chips. Breakfast next.
Going to this part of town, I looked for a place nearby I could meet a family member for something to eat. I looked at Riverdale Farms as we've frequented this location to use different services for decades. It's a lovely country setting where retailers have barn like structures and green lawn lots. Avon mountain is behind the shops with the Heublein Tower in view.
Avon Country Deli was new to us as we hadn't discovered it in the back of the complex. Photos showed it had a large patio with tables and umbrellas for outside seating, and as it was a beautiful summer day and their menu had the fare we were looking for, it was the perfect choice.
This is a mixed review as five of us had different experiences with our orders. One had a house ice tea & lemonade which was really good. The two people who had take-out sandwiches were very happy with their choices.
Some sandwiches on the menu are named after local Avon fixtures, and one of them, Governor's Horse Guard, with roast beef, provolone, horseradish sauce, lettuce and tomato on rye, had a good portion of roast beef that was rare as I was told. The recipient gave it 4 out of 5 stars.
The chicken salad on white our other take-out recipient loved. She added more lettuce, gave it 5 stars and looks forward to another. They both appreciated the small bag of potato chips and pickle that came in their containers.
My Sonoma Chicken salad on lettuce with cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and grapes with an accompanying dressing was good. Too much lettuce for me which I couldn't finish. Next time I'll get the chicken salad on bread. I'll give this 4 stars.
The Buffalo Chicken Salad, was the clunker, and received only two stars from the diner, (even one!) which is why for this visit I'm giving three stars overall. The menu describes their Buffalo Chicken Salad as a bed of lettuce with buffalo chicken, bacon, avocado puree, celery, carrots and 'bleu' cheese dressing.
What came on my partner's plate, was a lot of lettuce, a few slices of plain chicken meat and a bit of shredded carrots . We're not sure this was actual roast chicken or deli meat because the slices were so thin and uniform. There was no buffalo seasoning or rub on the chicken slices. What made it Buffalo chicken, was a sauce decoratively waved across the chicken slices probably from a squeeze bottle.
The rest of the salad ingredients were all missing. No bacon. No avocado puree. No celery. ? Blue cheese dressing came on the plate which had a ranch consistency and he wished it had been chunkier. Discussing his salad later, he noted, "It's primarily a breakfast place where you can order breakfast all day. How could they not have any bacon?" Good point.
We also thought the salad would have actual buffalo chicken, so were surprised when it came to the table. Maybe with the other listed ingredients it would have worked as is.
Another issue was the brusk tone our server had on arrival and through most of the meal. Upon arriving and asking for a table for three, she seated us and said, "you do realize we're closing in 45 minutes." I said I'd looked them up online and thought it said 2 to 7. She said maybe I meant 7-2. Closing table umbrellas around us, she seemed ready to close.
We do plan on returning for things we liked and for their large breakfast offerings....
Read moreUh... No. Reading the other reviews, I'm wondering if maybe we were there on the wrong day or something? The food was way overpriced for what we received. The bacon was fully cooked but freezing cold. The eggs looked sad on the plate by themselves with two strips of bacon beside them. I see pictures here with potatoes on the plates but we didn't get any such potatoes. One of us ordered a breakfast sandwich, with maybe half a teaspoon of guacamole on it. We pointed out to the waitress that there was really no guac on that whatsoever, and she extremely grudgingly gave us a little more on the side. Pancakes tasted like uncooked flour. The wait staff were grumpy and not really interested. No eye contact whatsoever. When we sat down, my son asks for coffee and she gestures towards the coffee urns in the corner impatiently and tells him that he can get his own. I mean that's great, you could tell someone they're welcome to refill their coffee. But you can't bring them the first cup? We must be the only ones who couldn't understand what the hype was about because the place was jammed. Asked the waitress for a box for my pancakes when she delivered the bill, and she says yeah sure and then goes back to the counter and attends to pretty much everything else but getting me the box. clearly either no intention of bringing it or had honestly forgotten. But when my son stood up to go get it from her, she consciously ignored him as he stood in front of her patiently waiting to be acknowledged, and he had to ask someone else. She glanced over at him while he was taking it from the other guy who was helping him out, didn't even comment about having forgotten it. Just an angry grumpy crowd. We'll be sure to avoid this place going forward. $10+/plate was way too much for...
Read moreMy family of 4 showed up at 12:35pm on Sunday, significantly ahead of the advertised closing time of 1 o'clock. The staff refused to seat us because "we close at 1." Not only that, but they were fairly rude about it.
If you advertise your closing time and I show up almost half an hour ahead of that, YOU'RE OPEN and should provide service to your customers.
We were all pretty hungry and the day was beautiful, so we ordered sandwiches to go -- and then waited for 15 minutes without getting any indication that our orders WEREN'T about to be filled.
After overhearing a waitress telling customers at multiple tables of a "printing error" that was somehow responsible for their food being delayed by 30-40 minutes, I asked about our sandwiches. Once again the woman at the counter rudely responded, shrugging and inviting me to cancel my order if I didn't like it.
I suppose at that point I was almost THANKFUL that they rudely denied us a table, since even the customers that showed up at some arbitrarily satisfactory time weren't getting any food either. If you have infinite patience, you should try this place--based on how they treat their customers, their food must be exquisite.
EDIT after response from the Owner below and a follow-up discussion in person:
None of the above facts have changed, but since that day the owner of ACD sat down with my wife and me to discuss the incident. He was gracious and warm, and as friendly as the other reviews originally led us to expect. We still haven't eaten at ACD yet, but we both look forward...
