Umi Sushi & Sake — Restaurant in Bakersfield

Dec 2nd, 2021........we 1st Noticed the hand made Help wanted servers sign in door window, NEVER a good sign. We sat ourselves and it was several minutes before anyone came to acknowledge & give menu's (another sign of trouble.) we should have left, but we hoped for better. The Servers seemed to be more interested in the Carryout meals than us dining in. The server took my partners order and ran off without taking mine. I had to flag her down ( i would like to eat also I told her with a smile.) instantly my partners Rainbow sushi roll came out( that was fast). It looked old, water was pooling in the dish as though it had been refrigerated, and it tasted like that also. When we told our server just just said NO its fresh and she ran off again, we left the uneaten dish on the table. Then came the Garlic Edamame, hard , uncooked, but hot like it had been Microwaved from frozen,(YUK)No assistance after that. They did acknowledge us when we left with a thank you, But we...

Called the Umi to make a pickup order. The hostess stated an hour wait time for the order. Not an issue at this point. Waited over an hour to go pick up our order. Once we get to the restaurant we wait another hour and the restaurant still hasn’t even started our order. It was a holiday so we understood it was busy. We decided to just cancel our order and move on. They stated they would give us a refund for the order. It’s been over a month and still have not received a refund despite me calling numerous times and filing a report with the BBB. They stated that they have to wait for the owners to come back to see if they would be able to issue a refund or not. I asked if I can contact them and they said no. One time I called and they said they don’t give refunds and they weren’t sure why someone would tell me they did. So essentially they stole my money and are refusing to give me my money back. There are a myriad of sushi restaurants in Bakersfield that you can choose from. It feels like a new sushi restaurant pops up on a regular basis. I do feel the city has been fully saturated with sushi locations.

With an exception of one or two locations, I have been to pretty much all of them in the greater Bakersfield area (multiple times for most locations) in the past several years. In my experience, Umi consistently has one of the highest quality of food, especially fresh sashimi.

My go to order is premium sashimi plate. Sure this is a dish that will cost you a little more. But the experience of having fresh sashimi is what sushi is all about. My wife prefers to have their udon, garlic chips roll while my kids love their donkatsu.

My family goes to Umi at least twice a month. Sometimes we find ourselves visiting Umi on a weekly basis. It is all because we are guaranteed good sashimi, rolls, udon,...
