TL;DR: Old school Italian deli with top notch sandwiches, friendly staff, and the best Italian sub you will find in Baltimore County.
I have been a longtime fan of the DiPasquales family businesses, from their classic Italian markets in Baltimore to their new speakeasy style restaurant, Forno. Living in the county, I have always known about Mastellone’s but somehow forget that it delivers the same amazing quality as the more modern DiPasquales locations. I finally made the trip to grab a weekday lunch and could not have been happier with my subs.
The shop sits along a busy stretch of Harford Road, so be ready to parallel park quickly or find a nearby side street and walk over. Inside, it is everything you want in a true old school Italian deli. No frills, just shelves full of authentic Italian groceries, a big cold case with sauces, side dishes, desserts, and even a solid wine selection to take home.
I ordered the Old World Italian sub, made with sopressata, capicola, prosciutto, fontinella cheese, olive tapenade, tomato, and a drizzle of EVOO on a toasted fresh baked roll. It was absolute perfection. The meats were thinly sliced and perfectly layered so that every bite had the full mix of flavor and texture. Salty, a touch spicy, and incredibly satisfying. At twelve dollars, it is the ideal price point for a weekday lunch that feels like a treat.
The staff could not have been nicer. They were friendly, efficient, and you can tell they take real pride in what they do. Overall, Mastellone’s is everything you want in a neighborhood Italian deli and absolutely worth the trip for anyone chasing elite...
Read moreI'll admit I haven't tried anything else here except the Meatball sub. But don't hold that against me, because it's awfully difficult to visit Mastellone's without leaving with a meatball sub. These are, by far, the best meatball subs you'll get in the Baltimore area. The sub cost $9.95, but it WILL fill you up. These things are enormous! They hollow out a 1/2 loaf of Italian bread and fill it with delicious meatballs, sauce, and a ton of gooey home-made mozzarella cheese. There's cheese in the middle, along the sides, and down at the bottom of the hollowed out loaf. The biggest problem with this sub is attempting to eat it. Unless you're part hippopotamus, your mouth will probably not open wide enough. Which means you'll be in for a sloppy mess as you try to take bites along the sides. But that's ok, eating a meatball sub is SUPPOSED to be sloppy!
As for the rest of the store, they have some really nice looking meats and cheeses in their display cases, and one of these days I'm going to give them a try. But for now, I'll just keep stuffing myself with those delicious...
Read moreDrove from Harford county to the Harford Rd location only to be shushed out of the store by one of the rudest people I have encountered during this pandemic. This employee (man) told us they were servicing customer pickup orders only and didn't we see the sign outside. He went on and on about how you are keeping your employees safe. He said we needed to order online first. Nowhere on your website does it say that. If that is the case you should lock the door and after knocking should you allow customers to enter who have an order to pick up. There were three of us plus 2 other ladies who also were there to shop. He was so rude all 5 of us left. We are all mindful of how Covid has changed our lives and the stress it has caused. But good food of all things, at least in my life, is what I look forward to hence the reason I traveled so far to your store. I have just one suggestion...teach your employees some customer...
