The good: Delicious vegan pizza, nice aesthetics with wood/industrial look and some friendly staff. The Bad: Some unfriendly and inattentive staff as well as falsely advertised specials. I went for the first time for Vegan Restaurant Week. There were many participating restaurants but I was persuaded to Paulie Gee's when my friend told me they had a movie night with two for one drink specials on the Tuesday of the Vegan Restaurant Week. I went onto their Facebook page to check out the details. Under the events section it listed a Mad Max movie and drinks specials called "twofers," which included margaritas, beers and red wine. I decided I'd have the margarita special and pizza when we went. When seated in the back bar, a blonde server asked for our order and I inquired about the vegan menu and the margarita special. She never answered my question about the vegan pizza menu and informed me there were no margarita specials. She insisted I was wrong and mistakenly must have read the wrong date. How did two of us read the same thing incorrectly? I suggested they check their events page because others were likely to read it wrong as well. She left and came back to tell us that we were indeed wrong and what did we want to order. Generally, reputable places would honor that advertisement but not Paulie Gee's. Instead, she left us to go change the posting on the events page by deleting the margarita special! I wonder how she would have responded if I had shown her a screenshot of the post with the margaritas listed. I asked for more time to order because I thought I knew my order but now needed to look over the menu and she said to take as long as I needed. I ended up having to get her attention to come back to take our order since it had been so long. The food was quite good and we enjoyed our pizzas. She never came to check on us though and we had to get her attention once more to ask for the bill. We asked for separate receipts and she told us to mark who had ordered what and which card went with each order since she couldn't remember. I found it a little odd since there were only two of us, a pizza and red wine for one and a pizza and lemon lime soda for the other didn't seem too hard to remember, especially after having a more memorable encounter about the margaritas. This isn't a big to me but the fact that she never came back to take our payment is worth mentioning. I had to ask another employee if we could pay and she said she would find the server. I watched her wander around looking for the server but she never found her and took our bill to the bar instead. It was also another employee that asked if we wanted boxes for our remaining pizza. I found the food great but the experience as a whole left more to be desired. It wasn't a great first impression and I don't have any incentive to visit again. I wish I had known there were no specials as I certainly would have chosen another...
Read moreTouche. I must tip my hat to you, that is a top notch response. My previous review was unconstructive and adversarial, and your assessment of me as a dick was fair and founded. I'm sure you put an incredible amount of work into this restaurant and for me to so cavalierly lambaste it is in poor taste.
I will, however, present a more constructive criticism here. I drove 9 hours today from North Carolina, got into town, and was hungry. Your pizza looked good so I showed up. I shouldn't have said the music was terrible. It would be more accurate to say the music sounded terrible. The acoustics of this space are very poor and thus, even the glorious soulful tones of the legendary Aretha Franklin (RIP) sound harsh and disturbing. The staff was friendly and helpful, no complaints there.
I was looking for a large salad and a small portion of pizza. I can appreciate the time and love that went into coming up with whimsical names like "arugula schmoogala" pizza and the "grape to meetcha" salad. I myself am a lover of sillyness. They sounded delicious, but I was not looking forward to actually saying the names of these dishes out loud to the stranger taking my order.
These things, combined with the fact that I wasn't going to get away spending less than $20 guided me to the decision that this place wasn't for me. I'm sure the portions are fair for the price. I'm sure the food is delicious. There are lots of positive reviews here, so obviously I'm in the minority. I was tired and hungry and posted an insensitive review, and for that I apologize. And no I did not try the food, but I stand by my 1 star rating because the ambiance is genuinely terrible in my opinion.
On the subject of gentrification, I hope that it's something you don't take lightly. It's great that you offer high quality food, but it's unfortunate that you don't have anything at a price point accessible to the lower income people that have lived here their whole lives and are now being priced out in housing and in food options. There are other ways to help the underprivileged in your community - donating to food banks, advocating for affordable housing, etc. Maybe you do things like this, I don't know. I hope as a business owner in a gentrifying neighborhood you keep this in mind, and act as a...
Read moreWorst ordering experience in a long time. Called to place an order for pick up appx 6:50pm May 26th and was told I needed to place it online on Wednesdays, but was not told the reason why was due to a special. I figured that was why when I got to the chow website to place my order. I chose the 2 for 22$ option and added two toppings each, one to the Beatrix Kiddo and the other to the Greenpointer, as it says that extra toppings can only be added to those two pizzas and the Black Mamba, and if toppings added to other pizzas were added they would be cancelled. The website got weird as it kept replacing the second pizza name for the Beatrix Kiddo. But still, would show both greenpointer and kiddo for the order on the second pizza even after checkout. I was more concerned about keeping one pizza vegatarian anyways, not so much the cheese and sauce combination. So I called and got the same person. I expressed I thought something might be wrong and wanted to get it fixed if so. This isnt a big deal, it is just a glitch or something. She got extremely rude with me and said I did the wrong thing over and over again as I could only get extra toppings on the Beatrix and that the website says beatrix only. She even let me know she made the website herself and was looking at it right now and it says toppings can only be added to the Beatrix Kiddo. Look,... I have a screenshot and it says otherwise and even if I was wrong there is no need to be so rude. Just wow. I also expressed concern about the order time. She repeated over and over again then too that she had TOLD ME that it was their busiest night! Yes, thanks, you kept letting me know, I get it. Well that is great, but still, it would have been nice to know before ordering that it was going to be over an hour and a half, so that I might have chosen another location to eat as I had just worked a long day and honestly could care less about it being the busiest day or not. Seeing as she wouldn't have it especially about the website and telling me repeatedly I ordered it wrong AND was so rude about the whole thing and it seemed like there was no correcting anything and only telling me I am wrong and bothering her as she is busy, I just asked her to cancel the order. No thanks to you all at all. Thanks for saying Happy...
