I know my review of Viola Cucina may come across as bias because I have known the owner since high school, but I assure you this is not the case. In fact, it took me over a year from when he opened to finally make it down to visit his restaurant. My wife and I went here last Thursday evening and was greeted by the owner Don as we entered (It was nice to see him again). We were seated at the bar where his wife Allie was the bartender. We started out with two great cocktails. Allie was very pleasant and makes for great conversation. The first thing my wife pointed out was how calming the restaurant looked and how inviting the décor was. We started off by ordering the calamari because we read all the reviews of how outstanding others found it to be. Well, it did not disappoint. The calamari were perfectly cooked and comes served with a lemon garlic that was so tasteful yet not overpowering. Next, Don sent us a plate of his house meatballs which are served over whipped ricotta. If you ask me, one true test to a great Italian restaurant is its meatballs. Like their calamari, the meatballs did not disappoint. In fact, they may have been some of the best meatballs I ever had. By serving over the whipped ricotta, it allows you the opportunity to alter the taste as you wish. Finally, for dinner I had the chicken parmigiana, which technically is not on the menu but as I read in other reviews is made to order. The chicken is fried just right in seasoned breadcrumbs and is tender while the pasta was delicious. My wife decided on the gnocchi bolognese which is done with pomodoro, mozzarella, and just the right amount of basil. My wife simply called her dish “outstanding” In closing I will say, what Don has accomplished at Viola is more than just great Italian food. He captured an establishment that you not only come to eat, but to come to enjoy the atmosphere, company, and enjoyment of friends and family. Exactly what every Italian restaurant should strive for. Best of luck to you my friend and great...

If I could give this place seven out of five stars, I would. Viola Cucina is simply the best Italian dining experience I’ve had — hands down.
From the moment we walked in, Don (the owner) made us feel like honored guests. His warmth and hospitality set the tone for what would be an unforgettable evening. The staff’s service was impeccable — attentive, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do.
Chef John is a true artist. Every dish was a masterclass in flavor and presentation. Viola offers traditional Italian favorites, but with a fresh, thoughtful twist that elevates them far beyond the ordinary. It’s comfort food reimagined with sophistication and care.
The ambiance and atmosphere are as carefully curated as the food — intimate, charming, and full of character. It’s small and cozy, but executed with big-league precision and heart.
And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better… the desserts. That’s an entirely separate conversation. Each one outpaced even the excellence of the main meal — indulgent, balanced, and beautifully plated.
I had read the Rhode Island Monthly review before coming, but it honestly doesn’t do this place justice. Viola Cucina stands head and shoulders above an ocean of Italian restaurants in Rhode Island. It’s a rare gem — small, refined, and run by a consummate professional with a deeply talented team.
