Having a 4.5-star rating on both Google and Yelp confirms that the restaurant is a big hit in the community. I concede to the localsâ opinion. The Mexican food expertise of the clientele that were coming and going this afternoon would withstand vigorous scrutiny. Without question these folks know Mexican food and love Mexico Viejo Bar and Grill. Their credentials are obvious. Advice for the out of townersâŚ.Saying that you are from [fill in state] and you âknowâ Mexican food, loud enough for someone to hear it in this restaurant, would cause an involuntary, hissing spray of beer from their mouths, followed by a slap of the table and raucous laughter. Sit down and enjoy the food.
The menu covers the OkieMex food spectrum and many traditional items like soups. Decent red salsa, thin crispy chips and an excellent roasted, medium heat jalapeno salsa, got things started. A friendly, patient and assiduous young lady was managing the floor. The food was delivered on the customary hot plates from the broiler, with enough heat to sustain the perfect food temperature throughout the meal.
My wife made an unfortunate selection from the Lunch Special menu, the Sophia Special; spinach filled enchiladas covered in queso. The down fall of the dish was the spinach. Likely frozen not fresh. It was rated ânot the best I have hadâ by my wife. Competing against spicy meats, covered in queso; this is probably one of their least popular meals. Not recommended. Real Okies donât eat spinach enchiladas.
I chose the Lunch Special Chimichanga with beef. A decent size flour tortilla, packed to capacity with ground beef, rolled and folded, deep fried and covered with very good queso. Pico, guac, rice and beans filled out the hot plate. Well-seasoned beef, smooth refried beans, fresh guacamole and average rice. Roasted jalapeno salsa added another layer of flavor to an enjoyable meal.
And there you have it. It may be the version of authentic OkieMex you are looking for!

My wife and I wanted a midday drink to celebrate her final chemo treatment and being cancer free. Yay!!! So we parked by the entrance and as we walked toward the front door a sign saying 99¢ margaritas caught our eye. We said we'll have several lol. Went inside, was seated immediately, chips and salsa brought to our drink order taken and we searched the menu. Wow I was wrong about this place. I ordered two tacos and beans for around $8.50 and my wife ordered a chimichanga, maybe $10. We each had a great lunch and two drinks along with great service....

The food is decent, and it costs a little bit less than El Maguey, but it was not nearly as high quality.
The restaurant has some nice features, but things are haphazardly installed and the bathrooms were a mess. If the atmosphere was chill and cozy, I could excuse the mid food due to the decent prices.
Iâm my opinion, just drive down to El Maguey and eat there, the atmosphere is better, the restaurant is cleaner, and the food is...
