South Side Grubz Soul Kitchen — Restaurant in Battle Creek

The food here is nothing short of amazing. My wife and I had the catfish dinner popcorn shrimp dinner, with collards, fried okra, and Mac and cheese for sides. All were fresh and perfectly cooked. I appreciated the fact that the fried okra had a light, crispy batter, while the catfish was cornmeal crusted. Many/most places they would have shared the same coating mixture, meaning the okra would have been too heavy or the catfish too light. Everything came out hot and crisp (except the Mac and cheese, of course, which was rich and creamy!) Collards were delicious and almost velvety in texture. The dining room is fairly spartan, but clean and comfortable. We will definitely be returning the next time we’re in the area! This is well worth the 5 minute detour if you’re passing by Battle...

I just love this place. I work in roofing so I travel all over Michigan and I like to try new places. Southside Grubz did not disappoint. Their service is super friendly, their menu options are really unique and everything I’ve tried there has been delicious. I visited there on two occasions already in a month’s span, and i don’t even live in Battle Creek. After I ate there the first time, I knew I had to go back and try something else. Their catfish is excellent, and so was their Brisket. I can’t remember what the brisket dish was called but it was served on some fries with cheese. It was amazing. Today I thought to give this place another try, overall it was quite good, the fries wasn't the best I had, the guy working there explained that they were trying to make the fries a little more crispy. The burger was really good and the service was good too. Today's review raised it from 3 to 4 stars.

Prior review: I came to this restaurant shortly after 7 to get dinner and they were closed. I drove out of my way to try this place.. The hours on the red business hours sign and Google say they are open until 8pm but the winter hours sign right below say close at 7pm. It is now spring. I will update again when I actually try this place...
