Another serendipitous stop! We exited I-77 at Harper's Road in Beckley, WV for a quick breakfast en route south from Charleston to Kitty Hawk, NC. We'd seen the McDonald's sign and had resigned ourselves to eat there but I turned too soon at the busy intersection and there wasn't a back entrance. I made a quick left turn into the GoMart gas station and saw that there was a deli inside. We decided to see if they offered breakfast. It was around 9:45 AM.

The girl working the counter was very nice and said that they didn't have a breakfast menu but suggested that we have a BLT and she could put an egg and cheese on it. That sounded good and I asked for whole wheat bread.

While we waited, we wandered through the shop looking at the hot sauces and various jerky varieties being sold. An extremely nice gentleman came out from the kitchen and asked if the girl working the counter had told us that they didn't open until 10:00AM. I said she hadn't but that was OK, we could either wait or go elsewhere but the man said that he just wanted us to know that it would be a few minutes because the grill had to heat.

It was maybe ten minutes before our sandwiches were delivered to our table and they have to have been the best BLT sandwiches we've had anywhere. Everything was fresh and so good.

Merchants Deli is definitely an excellent choice when it comes to food for the soul. I had a bologna sandwich that took me down memory lane. I hadn’t eaten a bologna sandwich since I was a kid. I have a burn mark from my last attempt at making one. The flavor of that sandwich felt spiritual. My lady really enjoyed the food too. She looks forward to getting more of their meat in her mouth. The owner was extremely kind and passionate about his business. There was a brief moment where I felt like he was the father I never had. Tears welled up in my eyes but I fought back the emotions by complimenting him on his Cool Mariners hat. His feet were adorned with a cool pair of retro Jordans that was visually pleasing too. The ambiance was peaceful and felt like all the chaos in the world was going to be over with each bite of that delicious nutritious sandwich. I strongly recommend this place for your next meal.
