Chatterbox — Restaurant in Benton Harbor

On Saturday, 7-17-2021 my party of 5 arrived at the Chatterbox at 6:00 PM. There were 3 servers and 1 cook. There were about 4 other tables in use. We waited about 10 minutes before a young lady asked is our drink order had been taken. I told her "no, but I wish you would take it". She took our order and drinks were served. We waited another 15 or 20 minutes for someone to take our food order. In the wait time I went to the bar and got 2 more drinks. Finally I waived a server down and a young man took our food order. Now approximately 40 minutes has elapsed. One of the female servers took off her apron and left the bar. After one hour I went back to the bar and inquired about our food. The young lady that took our original drink order said something like " if you want it get it yourself" and the young man said, and I quote " If you don't like it you can leave". I said "if we leave you will pick up the tab". He said "no I won't".

After 1 hour and 15 minutes our food arrived. My wife's and mine was good. One olive burger was overcooked. The onion petals were luke warm and the other couple's food was OK. I paid in cash with no tip. We have been frequenting the Chatterbox for years but, sadly, this experience has ended our...

Aw man we really wanted to love this place. And we were celebrating my mom’s 70th birthday. She’d been here before and loved it. Server was great and fun but then it took our food over an hour to get there. When we asked the server about it she told us it was our fault because we waited to order (at least two tables ordered after us and got their food and left before we got our food). Either way - we got our food finally and then when it arrived we asked for the check right away (we had to go!). The owner then came to the table (he was sitting at the bar next to us) and started accusing us of being rude. As we talked he backed down and started to agree with us (we just wanted to eat our food…) and then someone yelled “queers” at us. So we left. It started out really fun but turned into a pretty not fun and unsafe place. They have good reviews (and we were really excited to have the food!) so I’m sure it’s all good… but for us it wasn’t welcoming - the owner wasn’t welcoming. The community wasn’t welcoming. I just had one of the best burgers I have ever eaten! They were slammed from the time we got there until the time we left but the staff really worked well with each other & you could tell everyone had everyone else s back That is so nice to see. Things run much more smoothly that way. So the atmosphere was loud but everyone seemed to be having great time. There was a pub crawl going on. The food: I had the cheese burger & it was so flavorful and cooked perfectly. My husband had the olive burger & fries. Both were delicious. Our waitress was Racheal. She was very friendly and attentive. We sat at the bar & were watching the cook. He was slammed but he really knows what he is doing. He was knocking it out of the park! We were extremely impressed.
