It was a stunning summer evening when my wife Jennifer and I entered the James Joyce. We were waiting to hear from our real estate agent to see if the bid we put on a house a few blocks away was approved. We met the proprietors and a few of the locals, enjoyed a few special shots and perfect pours of Guinness. When we got the news we were so relieved that this was going to be our new watering hole, even more excited than getting the house. Since then we have hosted parties, enjoyed trivia night and soothed the dry crusts of our throats after a long days work here. It's located at the Harlem Metra stop, ready and waiting to take care of us. All the top shelf you want, drink specials daily, good selection of local brews and people, and some really tasty egg rolls can be had from next door. These two Irish lads, Brendan and Colin, have been entertaining my family and friends for over a decade now, and you really owe it to yourselves to come out for a tasting event, trivia, or sign up for one of their golf or sports outings. I'm pretty sure the bus will have a keg on it....
Read moreIf you’re looking for an authentic Irish pub in the Chicago area, this is THE ONE! James Joyce offers just about every Irish beer and whiskey you could ever want (and more you’ve never heard of), and the atmosphere feels just like being in a cozy pub in Ireland. The service is impeccable and friendly. There are many regulars at this pub, and it’s easy to see why! Everyone who entered was warmly greeted as if they were a close friend. If you get a chance to talk to part-owner Colin or his brother and bartender Emmet who hail from Ireland, you’ll be delighted by their lovely Irish accents and their endearing and playful charm. Do yourself a favor and have a pint of Guinness at James Joyce. It’s a true Irish gem of...

Usual sports on TV. Lousy music. Lame, predictable beer selections (Fat Tire, anyone?). The service is very friendly, and the location is good. But why pay extra to hangout here? Good place if you absolutely have to drink in a bar that is clean, safe, and like someplace you've seen before. If you have a taste for better value and/or adventure, Berwyn has many, many...
