I mean, people talk about it and how it’s a must-try. And I am all for the unique, intimate, local places. So - We finally tried it. Small. Seems like they have frequent regulars. Good sign.. BUT we walked in on Sunday, placed our name for a party of 2, and saw a couple getting up, about to pay and then leave. There are 9 tables, all were full. I thought, “what, what timing! This never happens to us!” No biggie, I thought. Mary? told us “oh it will be 15 min, tops.. probably less”.. we sat outside on the bench and figured theres no way they could forget about us. 3 more couples walked in during our 15 min wait time. At 16 minutes I walked in and saw she had sat one of the other 3 couples before us. Ok. Fine. But I know for a fact that we were the only name on the list when we checked in.. so thats NOT cool, really. Anyways, strike one. Kara, our waitress was very cool. Wife asked for extra crispy bacon. Didn't exactly get that on the breakfast sandwich (floppy bacon) so Kara made that happen. Whatever the kitchen sent out was definitely crispy. But it looked sad, and probably, microwaved turkey bacon. Ok, not quite strike 2. Everything else was pretty good. But the larger lady with some of her hair dyed, who checked us out at the counter seemed put out when we came up to pay. She was texting someone, maybe, and then looked up and was not very polite. I wonder if she was the one who angrily microwaved the bacon. I have had better breakfasts with more room to feel comfortable. The baked/grilled sweets and muffins are pretty darn good though! But I would not tell people “man, you have not lived until you’ve crammed...
Read moreThe antiquated decor of this cozy breakfast/lunch spot reminds me of being in my grandma’s kitchen. I had a hankering for an omelette, and was quite disappointed to walk in at 11:30am to find out that breakfast is only served until 11am. Their lunch menu is mostly comprised of sandwiches. I opted for a turkey sandwich with apple chutney on cinnamon raisin bread. My friend got the Greenwich st special, which is turkey with cheese and Granny Smith apple. We also ordered a bowl of curried yam soup to share.
My turkey and apple chutney sandwich was a bit of a let down. Only half of my sandwich had the apple chutney. The chutney eaten in isolation was tasty, but in conjunction with the cinnamon raisin bread, it was just too sweet. I would choose a different type of bread or incorporate some heat within the chutney to balance out the sweetness. My friend enjoyed his open face Greenwich st sandwich, but felt that the portions were too small for the price ($10). It was basically two single half slices of bread with turkey, apples, and melted cheese on top. Also, the potatoes were under seasoned and desperately needed more salt. In addition, the curried yam soup did not have enough curry. On the flip side, their cheddar bacon scone was delicious.
I remember really enjoying their Sunday brunch when I visited several months ago, but can only base my review on today’s visit as I don’t really recall what I ate...
Read moreDelicious, healthy, farm-to-table style food and baked goods. This is a small, quaint little neighborhood breakfast/brunch/lunch joint that serves food made with the freshest and healthiest ingredients. Because it is small, be sure you don't mind waiting a bit if you arrive during a busy time. You can also get stuff to go, apparently, or pop in and pick up some of their delicious breads and baked goods. My only complaint is that the last time we went to dine in for breakfast about a year ago, we arrived at the exact same time as another couple and they got their food and had eaten and were leaving as our food was being delivered. Perhaps our server was having a bad day or there was a mix up in the kitchen?? We were kind of busy talking that whole time, so we didn't mind terribly, but I did feel a bit miffed by the difference in service we experienced to the couple who arrived at the same time as us. My only other wish is that they were open later in the day. I'd love a healthy dinner option for my family when my daughter gets home from school, and this place...
