I went to the Tavern at the Sun Inn today with several friends and our young kids. It was during one of their Wednesday-Thursday music nights in the back courtyard. There was a wonderful musician on stage and we were excited to enjoy some drinks outside in a space where kids are safely contained and normally free to explore and be kids. However, we quickly became aware that this was not the vibe the Sun Inn was going for. Our kids were repeatedly reprimanded by the staff to stop playing with a plastic cup, not stand too close to the stage and not go in the grass area or run. I cannot express how unwelcome we felt and just how disappointed we are that a local business would be so family unfriendly. It is a space that was once alive with fun and music through the city-organized Tunes at Twilight but it’s clear that the Tavern is completely disinterested in community and creating a space where all are welcome.
During the time we were there, business seemed quite slow with 2-3 tables (out of ~15) ordering food inside a huge roped off area which contributed to an extremely low and lackluster energy. If they were more welcoming I expect the majority of tables would be filled. As a suggestion, they could maintain their side courtyard for a more muted experience and keep the back open to more energy. But after speaking with a manager about this, it’s clear they want the enormous back courtyard to feel like the inside of a restaurant by trying to put a lid on kids and controlling customer behavior. This is the antithesis of being community-friendly and truly disappointing given just how alive and vibrant the space used to be with community, which the Sun Inn could support and foster, but...
Read moreMy wife and I sat outside in their courtyard and had an early dinner. We both ordered the Craven Street Bowl.
The Craven Street Bowl is a vegan dish made with cauliflower rice, smoked tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots, green beans, red cabbage slaw and topped off with a Chipotle sesame oil.
When the food arrived, it looked like a volcano of goodness exploded into the bowl. The coolness of the red cabbage slaw paired well with the warm vegetables and rice. There were lots of flavors and textures from the bowl. This was a GREAT tasting meal!
The Virginia based Devils Backbone Vienna Lager tasted REAL good. I think the lager paired well with the Craven Street Bowl.
Shannon, our server, was TREMENDOUS! She was full of joy and always arrived at the perfect times.
PS- the Craven Street Bowl is named after the Benjamin Franklin residence in...

Got in and had an awkward greetings when asking for the inn bar, which was closed because there was no waiter who showed up. after we were send up stairs we got weird looks by another host.
