Back for the 2nd time. First time was a terrible experience, but chalked it up to being 1 week after the soft opening. So far the second is following the same trend. I don’t understand how when the ‘cantina’ is at 20% capacity, and you order food that is either ‘slow roasted’ (cooked ahead of time) and shrimp (3 minute max cook time) your food can take 25 minutes (actually I am still waiting). Update coming soon….
27 minutes. 16 people here now.. still no food. No wait/bar staff for in sight.
30 minutes. Wait/bar staff all came out from the back. They must have had a meeting.
32 minutes. Still no food. Also realized they use table salt on the rim of the glass for the margs. . Strange, tastes bad.
36 minutes. “…shrimp is almost done.” “It’s hard sharing a kitchen with Blue Cow”
40 minutes. Food came out. She comped my house marg for the long wait. Birria taco and a very good. Good amount of spice, hot with color on the tortilla. The consommé is very good.
42 minutes. Ope, just got my check. I guess I am done. Blackened shrimp taco was 100% than the first time we tried it. Lots of shrimp, cooked properly. The slaw was nothing special and couldn’t taste the corn aoli. Was a little dry. But still better than the slop I was served during the soft opening.
47 minutes. No one is sight to take my card so I can leave.
49 minutes. Finally looked at the bill. Marg isn’t comped.
51 minutes. Correction she comped the drink when she ran the card.
I would certainly be back by if the wait times were in line with a typical cantina. Keep working! Big Rapids needs this to be successful, there is a need and we want you to be around for a long time. We love the concept, small easy menu, good drinks, but it needs to be faster. I want to eat here before going to a concert or hanging out with friends for a quick dinner and...
Read moreFrida Taco was amazing! We had Katelyn as our server and/bartender and she was incredibly attentive and kind.
For drinks, I had a Key Lime Cocktail that was truly amazing, very sweet (just how I like it) and overall well balanced. Also, the Zenberry Cider Boys cider was also very tasty, it’s nice that they have multiple on tap cider options available.
For food, I got the all you can eat salsa and let me tell you, it was incredible. Served warm, it was very flavorful with just the right amount of heat and Katelyn offered many refills on both the chips and salsa. I also got the blackened shrimp taco- the flavors of this melded together perfectly, and I would recommend adding a little lime juice that is served with the taco to really complete the taste profile. The taco was in a small shell, but well priced. Also, it was filled to the brim with ingredients, so they certainly weren’t skimping on a very cheap taco!
The atmosphere is incredibly cute and cozy! There is a mural wall with a perfect spot for pictures (thanks Katelyn again!). Beyond that, the succulent accents on the hanging lights really add dimension and brighten the atmosphere.
Overall, I really recommend that anyone and everyone should be heading the Frida Taco and make it your regular dining spot in Big Rapids/ Paris area! I did look at the reviews, and they are really misleading. Most negative reviews are from the first few opening days, and it is obvious that they have worked hard to address each and every one that was presented. They are truly an amazing restaurant, and could be a great environment for just a girls night...
Read moreMy family and some friends went here a few weeks ago. The service was probably the best part of the experience and it was still a little slow and ordered items were missing. The music was very loud and the drinks were way overpriced. The food itself was disappointing, especially for the prices. The Cubano rice and beans tasted like licorice and fennel which was extremely off putting. My beans and rice order had sausage in it which wasn't listed on the menu. I don't eat much meat so I would have liked to know that beforehand. My friend also ordered them and hers came without sausage and tasted way different than mine like each bowl was made differently. I ate a few bites of mine but couldn't finish it because the fennel was so strong. The bean taco was more like a salad with a can of beans than anything else. The fish taco was straight up gross and gave me the burps. The shrimp taco was pretty good and is probably the only one I'd willingly eat again. The tortillas left a lot to be desired and the salsa with the chips and salsa tasted more like goulash. We added hot sauce to ours to make it better. The "agua frescas" were not agua frescas. They were lemon lime soda with fruit flavored syrup.
All in all it's not Mexican food. It didn't even seem very Mexican-inspired. It's a loud hipster bar with ok "tacos" and...
