Mary's Bluegill Bar & Grill — Restaurant in Birchwood

We've been looking for a really good Fish Fry Friday place, and Mary's Bluegill Bar certainly didn't let us down. The Lobster Bisque was very good and full of meat. Honestly, I don't know how they make any money on it. You get a regular sized bowl for the price of a cup. We got onion rings as well. They are very large rings and well breaded, but not over- breaded like a lot of them are these days. I ordered the perch platter, which I got with French fries and coleslaw. The perch pieces were about 4 inches long and lightly breaded. Very tasty. The French fries were close to shoestring size and well done. No sogginess to them. The coleslaw was pretty good, but by far the last important or impressive part of the meal. My wife got the wallet filet, deep fried and said it was better than our other favorite dish fry place. So that's a big plus for The Bluegill Bar. She got it with fried baby red potatoes and said they were very good. We'll be going back to try other items from their menu, but be aware the servings are very generous and you'll fill up fast.

I love chasing Friday fish frys to find the best fish all over! A friend highly recommended this and we're so glad they did! It was busy but we didn't have to wait for a table at all. Our waitress was quick to come get our drink order and ask if we wanted appetizers. We both had the lobster bisque! Oh my, so creamy, flavorful and full of meat! And the cup is the size of a small bowl! My friend has the beer battered walleye with mashed potatoes and gravy. Her piece of walleye was massive! Potatoes were fabulous and I'm not even a potato person. I chose the bluegill with wild rice. Wow! The fresh blue gill was flaky, light and wonderful! I wasn't a huge fan of the wild rice, but I'm bougie about wild rice. I thought the coleslaw was great but my bestie didn't love it. She's just not a fan of a sweeter coleslaw. To each their own. We had amazing, tentative service and we both can't wait to go back for the perch and cod! The prices were fabulous for the amount of food you get and the freshness! Stopped here two nights in a row. First night 810pm was told the kitchen was closed, we ordered pizzas. Two other, assuming locals, walk in and they decided the kitchen was open for them and then let us know we could order off the menu. Seemed a little weird but whatever we got some food and had some drinks, bartender was nice. Second night in and it was packed and server was clearly frustrated. She took our group on and I had the broiled cod dinner, which was excellent. Continued having some drinks and socializing and keeping our server busy.
