Joy Wok — Restaurant in Blacksburg

This is a review that I feel that I have to explain a little bit more of why I rated it the way that I did..

First off the positive!

The food is absolutely amazing!

And that is the biggest reason that I go here I’m giving this a four star rating.

The food was not so good. I would definitely downgrade it to a three star and I gave a lot of thought to this before I wrote this review.

As a small business owner myself always very careful when there is strong, compensating factors in what I experienced.

So food is amazing but here is my issue.

Their lunch specials I believe and at 4 o’clock.

I look for value, especially around this time of the day. As a small business owner, one of the things I like to do is treat the people who bust their butt for me to a nice meal for lunch.

I look for places that have good value, reasonable portions, quick turnaround & good food!

About a week and a half ago I walked in the door at 3:57 PM

I literally looked at my phone before I ordered as I had to wait on another one of their patrons.

It was 3:59 when she took my order! I was in that door at 3:57, I just made it!

I started off by ordering one of the lunch specials.

I immediately was with what was unquestionably a very aggressive answer “ lunch specials are over, no more”

I was taken away by this!

I know that it was very close to the cut off time.

But I was in that door, ready to order according to the advertised specials.

I have done business with this place well over 100 times in the past couple of years.

Whether they recognized me or not, it just hit that button with me that I was like “are you serious“

It was also the way that she said it.

Abnormally aggressive, snappy and just plain and simple inappropriate!

There may, or may not be some cultural differences. In quite frankly, I don’t care!

If that was their policy, and she just simply said something along the lines of “ my system will not let me enter this price. It’s after 4 o’clock” I wouldn’t have been so initially triggered.

And I had six men that were looking forward to that food very much.

I asked one more time “ma’am, I was in the door three minutes, waited and showed her my phone that’s the time was still 3:59 PM.

She acted very upset that I was even asking for it!

It wasn’t cool!

After trying to rationalize with her, I’m pointing out the time that was not yet 4 o’clock when she was looking at my phone it turned 4 o’clock and she said “it’s 4 o’clock, special over”.

I’m still not OK with this, and that is why I’m writing this review.

I also want to put out there if this restaurant contacts me, acknowledges, my extremely honest review and reassure me with confidence that it’ll be addressed. Then I will give extremely strong consideration to changing this review to a five star review.

This really bothered me!

I don’t care if they recognize that I was or not. They shouldn’t never, ever approach situation, like this, with any type of aggression, no matter where, in the world you’re from, or no matter what mood you may, or may not be in!

It’s just not in general, a good thing to do especially with that type of energy behind it!

So I’ve been tossed and turned on what I felt comfortable & what was the right thing to say with what I’m communicating to anybody that may be reading this.

Here’s the caveat.

When I turned to walk away with this look disbelief, not exactly, knowing how to handle the situation & wondering where in the heck I was going to find another Chinese restaurant anywhere close to Blacksburg, South Carolina is where this whole situation really hit me!

There’s no competition!

Competition keeps everybody very sharp, on point, and always keeping in the back of your head. This little voice that tells you “if we don’t deliver this place a few blocks over will take our business.

There’s no competition anywhere close to this location within reason, especially if you’re looking for something quick that exists.

Maybe I’m wrong joy Walk, but please consider what I’m saying! Give it thought, and if it’s important to...

Nasty building. Nasty food. Nasty attitude.

Found what we believe to be a cooked maggot in our lo mein noodles. We called and the guy swore up and down that this had never happened before. I demanded a refund. My daughter took the food back and wanted to pick up a receipt where her money had been refunded to her card. When she arrived, he was ride. To the max. At first tried to say that it was a part of a shrimp. Then said that he couldn't be sure that she (my daughter) didn't put it in the food herself. When she explained that she didn't want to argue and was there to return the food and get proof of her refund. He did refund her and gave the refund receipt but when my daughter started to leave, he grabbed a pot with something in it and followed her to her car!! He was shaking the pot at her and said for her to look in it and that what she found was probably a bean sprout (that's apparently what was in the pot).

I'll share pics. Go ahead and do some comparison research. I'll let y'all decide if you want to eat here. The picture with two "things"..the one on bottom is what my daughter found in her plate of food. I pinched it with my thumb nail. It was a little smushy, but kept it's shape. It certainly was not a part of shrimp, certainly was not a noodle. The thing on top is something that we found while looking through the food more closely. Not sure what it is.

Upon further research, partly using Google reviews, we find that this is not the first time that anyone has "found something extra"...

Ordered by phone. Someone in another review mentioned that the women always quotes "10 mins" for every phone order. They were right...she said, "10 mins"! 🤣 The entrance into the restaurant has 2 steps down to the main level. I dont see how someone in a wheelchair could make it down. The dining area isnt much but its offered. The lady working was super friendly. The food was decent. I say this a lot lately......Not the BEST, but far from the worst! Everything was hot and freshly made. The portion size wasnt the greatest, but what I got ended up being enough. Thank you for the quick service and fresh food. Im sure we'll be back again sometime when we're back in...
