What a complete disappointment. We decided to give this place a try based on the favorable rating and reviews. I'm torn on leaving a negative review for this establishment but I feel like this is a must. First of all I am appreciative that she took my call for a carryout order with approx 12 mins to close(even though the dishes I ordered are pre-made.). My husband, son, and I was eager to have some Jollof w/goat, Rice&Stew w/goat, and Moi Moi. When we arrived the gentleman working front appeared to be less than organized or inexperienced or something(overall, just an odd greeting&interaction) We had to wait a few mins on the order, which was no problem. The gentleman tallied our bill and to my surprise the total was a very UN-deserving $42.34. Now, I understand it's not fast food. I also know it's a true labor to prepared Nigerian(African) cuisine. Cooking for my hubby of 18yrs, I can appreciate and respect the labor intense effort to produce such greatness! However, this experience was DEFINITELY not on par with "getting what you pay for". The stew was so scant it didn't even cover the top of my skimpy serving of plain white rice. Like, c'mon, IT'S RICE! The stew was sour like can tomato, too much oil, taste was lacking. Only the taste of intense pepper. Also, I ordered goat, but we all believe we received beef. W/my stew was a large bone, a small cube of meat and a cube of skin. Deff doesn't match the menu description. I'm posting a photo. With close review you can see the amount of tomato sauce that was meant for the rice. As for the Jollof, everything is pretty much echoed as noted above. VERY small portion sizes. Flavor lacks, unless you only seek heat. Meat is missing and isn't goat(imo). The fried plantain was good. Moi Moi taste like crayfish(which i was told that crayfish was NOT used). THIS COULD BE A SERIOUS PROBLEM! It should CLEARLY be noted on your menu that your establishment utilizes shellfish during food preparation. This could potentially be a liability in the event someone is given inaccurate info and in turn eat something that they're not to consume. Next? Allergy: anaphylactic shock... A series of events that come from this. Simple fix, DISCLOSE THIS ON YOUR MENU... Save yourself the headache that could potentially arise.... Anyway, I would possibly consider revisiting. I would love to have my quantity and quality balance with what I pay. There's other great establishments nearby that serve Nigerian (Ghanian, West African, etc) food. Three in particular that I've been to regularly over the past 10+ yrs. And with that, the lesson learned is that it doesn't always pay off to be adventurous.**side note: upon completion the lady(presume owner)brought our order to the guy to bag up. He reaches for 2 utensil packets and she swiftly interrupts him to tell him "just 1"(utensil pk). The guy confused as she's telling him this & declaring that the pack contains 2. This insinuation would indicate that someone will eat with the spoon while someone else utilizes the fork. 2 people, 2 utensils, 1 pack. By this time my husband is now having a look on his face (irritation), her worker is confused by her rationale, I'm still trying to understand the total. Well she finally gets "the looks" and switches her stance to (fake) seemingly realize "oh yeah there's 2 meals(that she prepped) in the bag, and 2 people". Then gives him the "ok" for that 2nd utensil set..Wonder what she would've insisted if my son had accompany us to pick up, rather than...
Read moreOrdered the isiewu and was pretty disappointed. It didn't taste like any other isiewus I have eaten in my life either in Nigeria or here, the plate itself was small and in that plate 30% was bone, 20% was sauce and about 50% was meat, of which only about two pieces tasted like goat meat. It tasted like most of it was beef mixed in with a very small amount of goat meat. I was excited to eat here once I saw the menu since I was only in town for a day but overall I'm not happy with my experience and wish I had skipped it.
Response to the owner - My review is an honest one and I have no delight in giving an unfavourable review or reason to lie. I almost didn't buy anything but was swayed by a particular review that said they drove 4 hours total going to and from your restaurant and felt it was worth it. Since I am from out of town and hoped for a similar experience, I felt I would have liked to have gotten honest advice from someone like me before buying. I felt therefore leaving a review was the right thing to do. I have seen pictures of isiewu from people who reviewed you positively on here, I had a lot more bone in mine. I estimated the percentage of the plate that was bone, if anyone knowing they could have that amount of bone in their dish wants to go ahead that's up to them but they should know so what they have is what they signed up for. I have eaten isiewu more than once in restaurants in Maryland and Texas and can say those dishes had bone , tasted similar and had goat meat. I would estimate the amount of bone in those at around 15% definitely less than 20. I have also eaten goat meat in other places that were not Nigerian and know how goat meat tastes. If I had been expecting cow meat I wouldn't have been as upset. More upsetting is that looking through your reviews after my visit a number of negative ones have suggested that they were promised goat meat but received beef so I don't think my taste buds are wrong. Future customers should have that in mind, who knows if you are right and I am wrong other restaurants that make goat meat will probably have a similar number of people thinking that at some point. There are a lot of cultures that eat goat meat and it has a distinct flavor that is hard to miss and very different from cow. As you said you have a lot of good reviews. There are definitely people who love your food and everyone has to make their own choice but it...
Read moreI was very happy I was able to dinner for early in the morning after a long night out (before 11am). I had the Fufu and vegetable Stew. The taste is something I can’t describe but I will say that it had some of the BEST seasoned greens I’ve ever had in my life. There was also a very strong fish taste to it and seemed to be a mixture of meats in it; all which where very tender and good. It was unique and I can’t wait to go today and get another order. My only critique is 1. The menu online is outdated and there prices have went up like the rest of the world; but they should change that. 2. I got very little “stew”. The greens where plentiful; but I was expecting to be able to sop up my fufu with the stew. It was barely any juices. So when I go tomorrow I will be sure to ask for a different type of container or either more juice in my stew. Either way the food was delicious, very very hot and fresh, and the guy was nice.
Update: came back today and tried the Egusi and Fufu. I can officially say I’m ADDICTED!!! Thank you Pat for reading my comment and paying attention! My stew had plenty of juice and the 1st bite I was again; shocked at how different but DELICIOUS and fresh it was. The quality makes the price worth it because you absolutely get what you pay for. I’m officially gonna be a regular...
