We were getting of Appalachian trail November 2019..."It was dark by 5 p.m. giving us only nine or at most ten hours of hiking time to reach our 20 miles a day goal. As Sandy, Tom, and I headed home we relaxed watching the sunset light up the sky like fire. It was a picture perfect farm scene. Sandy stopped back at Mountainside Deli on US Alt 40 where we met “Pooh” and “Sidewinder.” They looked happy to be out of the freezing cold too! He was heading to Springer Mountain like me. Pooh was going home the next day. I kept in touch with Sidewinder, hoping to hike together after Tom finished. Later he finished his thru-hike with Rock Naps, a fun hiker who I shared several shelters with in December. The lady at the deli was caring and consistently did more than expected. She cooked our subs, stuffing them with veggies we requested. She gave me a giant, supposedly a small, ice cream cone that was bigger than the large cones in Florida. She gave Pooh her own personal gloves since Pooh was cold and left her gloves in the last shuttle ride. I wish I got this kind lady’s name and highly recommended the Mountainside Deli!
November 14. Wolfsville Road to Crampton Gap Gathland State Park:
The morning started with another fiery sunrise across the Potomac River. We never got tired seeing the sunrise and old barns along the countryside. Sandy dropped us off and we were off...
Read moreI used to go to this place all the time but I moved so I haven’t been here in a while. I was recently in the area and made a lunch visit. I have to say I was very disappointed. The first thing I notice on a frigid 20 degree day is that I could no longer go inside to order. I had to stand in the cold to order. I thought it would be worth it for an amazing lunch however, when I asked if I could have my bun toasted I was told they do not have a toaster. Don’t you have a grill? Couldn’t you toast it on your griddle? That was pretty disappointing and then when I received my order I asked if they had ketchup and mayo packets and she said they don’t have mayo packets and only gave me ketchup. Could she not put some in a little container for me?? I spent $20 for a 6” sub order of fries and a small drink. Like WTH am I paying for??? Definately not the service!! I opened my sub and the bread was actually cold!!!! I will never ever go back here again. Thanks for charging me out the ass and not even trying to accommodate me. They also have Christmas stuff out but it’s hard to walk around everything to order a sandwich. I think the owner needs to rethink their business strategy. Horrible horrible...
Read moreWasn't expecting much and WOW did this place really impress!! I had just got done hiking a bit of the Appalachian trail to find Annapolis Rock and Black Rock (missed them both because I was staring at me feet and not signs) and put in more than a few extra miles.
I got done and made it back to the car, and I was a literal hot mess. Pulled up directions to hit this place up. Confused at first because it's actually tied to a florist. Nowhere to sit but in my car (the inside was closed due to COVID). I ordered the chicken bacon and ranch sandwich, fries, and an Oreo mixed ice cream thingie (not a shake). I knew that I wouldn't finish it.
The girl working there was super friendly, she brought it to my car and held my Oreo thingie for later. The sandwich was so amazingly good. I expected something with 10% effort and a microwave. Not at all. Super fresh, and hot, and one of the best I've ever eaten (no lie) with all of the ingredients mingled perfectly within. Fries were really fresh and HOT. I couldn't finish the fries (I tried). Almost ate the paper that the sandwich came in. Oreo thingie had chunks of Oreo cookies. So, so good. I would move to Boonsboro just to eat people's leftovers once a week from...
