During the last 3 years from moving here from out of state, we’ve been on a personal mission to find really great dining experiences. The dining experiences in Shreveport/Bossier City has left us wanting after coming from a city like Denver with an amazing food history and thriving businesses. Tonight we drove over to Fat Tuesday’s in Bossier City off Barksdale Blvd. It amounted to finding the elusive pearl in an oyster for us, which was a nice surprise.
It’s that sort of small, family type restaurant that you’re afraid if you tell too many people, it would spoil it for you. Zydeco music plays in the background, beads hanging on the walls and the most amazing mural painted on the large wall just drags you in.
We ordered the Cajun Chicken Cordon Bleu with the potato salad. The potato salad was a surprise, not filled with large chunks of potato that by the time you chew it all up, you’ve lost the flavor of everything else. It was cold, creamy, and with small chunks of potatoes that let you enjoy the texture, which was layered with flavoring. The blackened chicken was moist, packed with seasoning, just enough to make your nose tickle without having to follow up with your drink immediately. My husband loved the potato salad so much he wound up ordering a pint to take home later. As someone who’s not a southerner, the traditional potato salads here from egg based to southern mustard salads have left him wanting.
I ordered the special of the day, the Cajun Pasta meal. It came with soup of the day, broccoli cheese soup. I’m a big soup eater because of the amount of cold and snow in Colorado. I’ve had many a wretched bowl in my time, but today was redeeming. Most broccoli soups wind up being just cheese soup with some broccoli thrown in. With Fat Tuesday’s soup you could see the cheese melted in it as you pulled the spoon out on the first try. You could taste the butter and cream, as well as the fresh veggie flavor from the broccoli itself. Again the blackened chicken was moist, flavorful and tender. It was one of those dishes that makes you feel humbled that the chef/cook’s talent had become an humble artform with how balanced it was between the seasoning on the chicken and the home made sauce itself.
Dessert has to be bread pudding to follow the theme, but they also have some of the most incredible cheesecake as well. The Pecan Praline bread pudding came with a small container of extra pecan pieces and their home made whipped cream. The bread pudding didn’t need it as the second your fork delivered it on your tongue you could taste the nuttiness mixed with the flavoring. It was delicate but sumptuously rich.
They’re only open for a few scant hours a day as Brady Hibner the owner likes to spend time with his children after school. But I believe Brady has raised the bar on what we would have called traditional New Orleans faire. If you can find the time to get over, you should. It has etched a remarkable memory in the both of us because of the service and the meals. It will be so very much worth your time to...
Read moreWent for lunch around 1140ish and they were slammed. Cranked quite a few sandwiches and salads out with only a small wait. The French Dip sandwich was tasty - the bread dunked in the sauce especially - but even with all the cheese and dunking it, the meat was too dry. Overall really good flavor, I would just request half the cheese and hope for a better scoop of meat. The Cajun Potato Salad was flavorful too, but the baby food consistency is not for me. I'd pass considering it's an upcharge. They offer a large variety of cheesecake. The toffee slice was good but not as creamy and decadent as I was hoping for. My friend ordered their Cajun sandwich and was pleased with the spice.
On a separate note...disappointed they only honor the police/military discount if you specifically ask - even if you're standing in uniform. And when I did ask, the cashier made it seem like a chore. Weird attitude for a restaurant that...
Read moreGotta love Fat Tuesday's! We've been a few times and it's great but we'd never had any of the cold sandwiches so today we had the shrimp remoulade poboy. Actually we split it and had Cajun potato salad and the cole slaw. Excellent!
The poboy was full of Cajun crab salad and steamed shrimp on top of lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles with a tasty dressing both on the bun and on top. Hard to actually say how amazing this sandwich is but I usually want sandwiches got hot. This was totally out of bounds, great bread they bake daily, amazing crab salad, superb shrimp which pegged the flavor meter. Yummy!
We topped it off by sharing half of a sandwich sized brownie also made in house. To good, and sinful. You will not be disappointed.
Wish I had taken pictures of the sandwiches before we ate them but they didn't last that long.
Side bar - try...
