This Scottish gem offers an atmosphere that feels like a warm embrace, combining the charm of a Scottish pub with the vibrancy of a neighborhood favorite. The moment you step inside The Haven, you're greeted with a cozy, welcoming vibe that makes you want to settle in and stay a while. The decor blends traditional Scottish elements with a touch of modern flair, creating an ambiance that's both nostalgic and fresh. Think tartan patterns, warm lighting, and a relaxed, friendly crowd. Now, let's talk about the star of the show: the food. The Haven's fish and chips are a must-try. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and perfectly seasoned, it's a dish that embodies comfort food at its finest. Each bite takes you on a culinary journey straight to Scotland. And then there's the crafted black ale, Old Engine Oil. Rich, smooth, and with just the right amount of bitterness, it's the perfect companion to your meal. This ale is robust and flavorful, making it a great choice for those who appreciate a good craft beer. The staff at The Haven are another highlight. They're friendly and attentive without being overbearing, striking a perfect balance that makes you feel well taken care of without feeling rushed. Their laid-back demeanor adds to the overall relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant, allowing you to enjoy your meal at your own pace. One thing to keep in mind is the parking situation. It's a bit tight, which is typical for the area, but manageable depending on the time of day. If you plan your visit during off-peak hours, you should be able to find a spot without too much trouble. Final Thoughts The Haven is more than just a place to eat; it's an experience. From the warm and inviting atmosphere to the excellent food and drink, every aspect of this Scottish restaurant is designed to make you feel right at home. My experience at The Haven in Jamaica Plain was unfortunately disappointing. We booked a reservation without knowing that the lunch menu was incredibly limited. The offerings were not only sparse but also came at a surprisingly high cost. The portions, from the Birdies to the Cheese Plate, were notably small for the price. It left us feeling unsatisfied and questioning the value for money. While the ambiance was pleasant, the limited menu and high prices make it challenging to recommend The Haven for a satisfying dining experience. UPDATE: Thank you for addressing my concerns. However, the dismissive tone in your response only amplifies the unprofessionalism we encountered during our visit. The slow service, coupled with small portions and high prices, was disappointing enough, and your response unfortunately adds to the overall negative impression. I hope you consider addressing these issues more professionally in the future. Thank you for taking the time to respond to my review. While I appreciate your commitment to offering lunch options in Jamaica Plain, my experience extended beyond the limited menu. The service, which you describe as 'unhurried,' unfortunately crossed into the territory of being unprofessional. The slow service not only highlighted the disappointingly small portions and high prices but also left us feeling overlooked and undervalued as patrons. I acknowledge the economic challenges of running a restaurant and your commitment to maintaining menu prices. However, the limited menu, combined with subpar service, made it difficult to justify the overall dining experience. What was particularly disheartening was the unprofessional tone in your response, dismissing valid concerns and deflecting accountability. It's crucial for a restaurant to address feedback constructively and professionally. I hope that my feedback, as well as that of other patrons, can contribute to improvements in service quality. A balance between an economically viable operation and a positive dining experience is crucial for any restaurant's success. I sincerely hope that future visitors to The Haven have a more positive encounter with both the menu and service.

With all of the cool places to try in Jamaica Plain, how do you choose?! Fortunately I’ve got reliable friends to show me (and yelp to back it up). The Haven is a great Scottish restaurant with great beer and food. I went and ordered the Chef’s tasting, which is a four course meal of whatever the chef feels like making. You’ll need at least two people to order this and you may or may not get the meals I did. First course was a gazpacho with half a Scottish Deviled Egg. The gazpacho was fresh and topped with basil, yum. The deviled egg was decadent and had a nice little dressed salad underneath. Second course was a fried mashed potato empanada thing with more salad and a hearty beet and goat cheese salad. Amazing. Third course was mashed potatoes with two pieces of sausage and gravy, as well as fish and chips with tartar sauce and a mint side. Wonderful!! Last but not least was a toffee pudding. I loved that it was warm, moist, and not too sweet. I’m told that I need to come back and try the burger, which I absolutely plan on doing.

Excellent service, really unique decor and fun ambiance, food was pretty good, but perhaps a little lacking in salt. For our appetizers we got the pigs in a blanket sausage dish- the mustard in particular had great flavor and the sausage and pastry paired wonderfully with it. The pastry was nice buttery and flaky. The macaroni and cheese came out and looked very appetizing. However, it was a bit bland, and would have been a little better with some salt or additional seasoning. For our mains, we got the fish dinner which was essentially fish and chips. The fish was a little more browned at the top than how I usually see it, but that was alright, and probably a stylistic choice. The batter was thick and crisp. The wedge fries were big and substantial but cooked a little unevenly, and again needed salt or sessoning. The scotches and elderflower cider were terrific. Overall, the meal was good, we had a great time, and I would revisit The Haven to try their other dishes.

We were all underwhelmed. We stopped in on vacation, favoring local fare over chain restaurants. Maybe the experience was distorted by the poor service we received. To be fair, the other tables around us seemed to have great service. People who showed up after us all had their orders taken before us, their food and drinks came quickly. Our server seemed to forget about us and we had to yell for him to come to us after several attempts of getting his attention went unnoticed. Unfortunately, the food was overpriced for being so bland. $10 for a single scotch egg or sausage. No seasoning on the potato wedges, not even salt (that I could tell), and burger. The mashed peas that came with the haddock were cold, which may be intentional, but it's odd. My family wasn't prepared for the lack of options on the menu, so I provided a picture for future hopefuls.

Fantastic place for a cozy evening and a delicious burger. The "steak cut" french fries are also the best in JP. Great selection of whiskey and beer, super friendly and sharp wait-staff, and the perfect atmosphere - somewhere between fancy Michelin restaurant and cozy local pub. Never tried the Scottish fare, I can only report that the standbys (cheeseburger, for instance) are divine! Update December 2021 - All the above is still true, but if you want fresh pepper with your delicious food, bring your own pepper mill! The $50+ appetizer and entree were fairly spoiled by the grey desiccated flavorless powder, which was all the kitchen could come up with (think McDonalds single serve packets). If I were the chef, I’d be horrified and embarrassed. The food deserves (and the price dictates) fresh and high quality ingredients from start to finish.
