One of my most favorite foods in the entire world would be ramen. Rich flavorful broths with chewy noodles and piles of meats and complimenting vegetables crowed with the soy marinated soft boiled egg. Ultimately I would want to go to Japan for such masterpieces but alas, I am in Colorado. Here, finding really good ramen, or even acceptable ramen is somewhat of a challenge. Every place seems to have their own variations and special flares on classical proven methods and it makes them fall short.
Luckily in Boulder, there is My Ramen & Izakaya.
For me, this is the best ramen I have had in the state. I've had a lot of ramen from many places, but this is the only one that has shown consistency with their broths, ingredients and noodle quality. To clarify, the best I have ever had in the United States is what I use as comparison, not Japan as I think that is just unfair. For the U.S. however, this is really really good ramen. I tend to lean toward the traditional Tonkotsu ramen which from My Ramen & Izakaya is really fantastic. The broth is rich and developed, clinging on to the noodles like a good Tonkotsu should. I also really enjoy the Tantanmen ramen with the spicy pork. I tend to have to add hot chili oil to my ramens as I like a nice spice, but the Tantanmen broth and pork holds its own pretty nice.
All the toppings that you get in the various ramens are always fresh and in the proper proportions to everything else and the sold boiled egg is pretty fantastic. The only caveat to that is if you get delivery, you might get an egg that is slightly overcooked to what it should be, because of the time it sits getting heated up again in the containers. That has only happened a few times however and I understand it. Otherwise getting it served in the place has always been a perfect egg for me.
The service is also really great. The staff is polite and friendly and easy willing to make exceptions or special orders if you ask. Problems are handled pretty quickly and solved accordingly. People always ask me about the price of restaurants and if it's worth the value and a good majority of the time I label them as expensive for what you get. Being in Boulder I would say that the ramen here is priced about what I would expect for a bowl of upper quality ramen. Some things like most places are a bit on the expensive side and overall compared to the rest of the country, this is priced very high for ramen. That being said, I think the quality and the service speak for themselves and justify the elevated price tag. When we think of ramen we tend to lean on the 40 cent package in stores and forget that these broths and noodles take hours and hours of preparation, cleaning and evolution to get that rich wholesome broth.
Overall, this is my favorite ramen place in Boulder if not Colorado. Consistent quality, service and proven commitment to knowing how to make true ramen broths is why this is the best place for me. I highly recommend you stop by for dinner, or having it delivered for lunch. You won't be...
Read moreTLDR: half of the food we ordered tonight was literally RAW and the ramen is literally worse than what anyone could make at home with packet noodles.
We used to eat here all of the time, but today we made an order for pickup - curry ramen, miso ramen, chicken karaage, tempura shrimp, gyoza and takoyaki. The chicken karaage and takoyaki were raw, and the tempura shrimp smelled like old shrimp that had been left at room temperature for too long. Previously (under different ownership, apparently), their ramen bowls looked genuinely homemade and worth paying for. Now, the ramen appears to be the same kind you can buy from Hmart, and for the curry ramen, they clearly just add a block of golden curry paste to the same dashi-based broth that they use for other ramen, considering the chunk of curry block was congealed to the bottom of the broth container when we got it. When we tried to get a refund on the RAW FOOD, they first tried to insist that chicken is "supposed to be pink like that, that that's authentic (my husband has lived in Japan and even if you haven't, you know it isn't). On the matter of the takoyaki being undercooked, they insisted "it said to cook it for 4 minutes" as if this is the first time they've cooked it or something, which is WILD because we don't own a restaurant and STILL own a takoyaki maker that we FULLY COOK the takoyaki on. God forbid we wanted to be lazy and order instead of cooking our own octopus today. They forced us to call Doordash, insisting they couldn't, at which point DOORDASH said they should have been able to initiate the refund, and turns out this is their second strike with doordash for such a problem this month alone (which coincides with new ownership taking over based on other reviews)! We wouldn't have gotten a refund at all if it wasn't for the kind Doordash employee. Truly a disappointment after the years of good quality we had gotten used to. Go to Osakas or Tasuki if you want this food, don't waste your money here just because of the...
Read moreA group of 7 people from the Denver Hungry-Hungry Asians and I went to My Ramen & Izakaya, located in Boulder, CO. The drive from Denver to the location of the restaurant was a little bit long, but worth it once you taste their food!
You might not be able to spot the location since it is located away from the main street, so be on the lookout for it. Looking around the restaurants, it is quite small, but they were able to seat the 8 of us comfortably. The atmosphere was like dining with your family.
To start our dining experience, some of us ordered appetizers. These include shrimp tempura, edamame, tori karaage, and California rolls. In my opinion, the best was the tori karaage. This dish was made with boneless chicken and fried with some coating. I didn't try with the yum yum sauce, but eating one of these alone was a good experience. I enjoyed it very much.
Six of us ordered ramen as our main dish, and I am so glad I was one of them. I started with the tonkotsu broth and added the shrimp as my protein. You can not go wrong choosing this broth. It was delicious! Slurping on the broth itself, I can imagine being in a noodle house somewhere in Japan. The flavors from the broth was so good! The ramen itself was chewy, just the right texture to eat. Other than the broth, my next favorite part of the meal was the eggs. Eggs were marinated to perfection. So good!
We were offered some tea from Happy Dumplings, a nearby restaurant whose relationship and collaboration with My Ramen & Izakaya was perfect. The taro tea I got was so refreshing. Just one sip, and you'll want more of it.
If you are in the Boulder area or are looking for a ramen place to go, I highly recommend My Ramen & Izakaya. They...
