Urban Plates — Restaurant in Brea

For the past few days I was visiting a friend in California, I had the pleasure of dining at Urban Plates in Brea. I must take a moment to commend Bailey for his outstanding service, which truly elevated the entire dining experience. From his warm welcome to his impeccable knowledge of the menu, Bailey's dedication and passion for his job were evident throughout our visit. As my party and I entered Urban Plates, Bailey's friendly demeanor immediately made us feel at home. His genuine enthusiasm for the menu and commitment to providing an exceptional dining experience set a positive tone for the evening.

Bailey's knowledge of the menu was impressive, and he navigated us through the diverse culinary offerings with ease. His recommendations were spot-on, showcasing not only his familiarity with the dishes but also his genuine love for the restaurant's farm-to-table concept and the use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients.Throughout the meal, Bailey checked in on us regularly, ensuring that we were enjoying our experience. His attentiveness, coupled with a genuine desire to make our meal memorable, demonstrated a level of hospitality that is truly commendable.

They raised the prices for the plate pass (it used to be about $12 for any dish but that is now only 20% off). They also add a mandatory service fee so customers can cover the cost of their employees healthcare which is deceptive since you’re really paying more than the advertised price. If the company is too greedy to pay their employees health insurance and take from customers to cover it is it really worth it for me to support this business?

Their food is also hit or miss and it depends on the chef that day. More misses than hits. Often the food is barely edible because it’s burnt (the brussel sprouts) or way too salty (most of the bowls). I got sick from a nicoise tuna salad here and their salads are boring. I had a caesar salad from here not too long ago and that night the dressing was NASTY.. it tasted overly fishy, texture was weird like lumpy and it was missing a few things. I didn’t eat it after noticing the smell and that the tiny amount I tasted wasn’t right (yum a dry salad without dressing) and my partner agreed it was way off. It’s a hassle to go back in and wait for a replacement.

They took away the good vegan and vegetarian options like the quinoa loaf, cauliflower rice, thai curry and others I can’t remember then replaced them with gross ones. There’s also less vegetarian entrees overall which is odd (one option they recommend is building a plate of side vegetables LOL). I do like that their chicken is high quality, they have good service overall and they’re open later.

I’m addition to burning and over seasoning the food, this location also messes up to go orders quite a bit. This used to be my favorite location but the last 6 months or so things are often missing or wrong. It seems some of the workers just don’t pay attention. Also, more than a few times, they’ve given me something I didn’t order that I suspect is a replacement because they ran out of what I wanted. The thing is, if that’s the case, they should ask the customer what they prefer since sometimes a customer doesn’t like or can’t eat the replacement. Not a fan of this bait-and-switch.

My partner likes this place but thankfully we live in SoCal and have a ton of options in addition to different grocery stores close by to prepare our own food. This place used to be a good value but it isn’t anymore so we won’t be coming...

I started with the Tossed Shrimps and Beets Salad, which was a refreshing combination. The flavors were well-balanced, and the quality of the ingredients truly shone through. My Kids and Hubby opted for the Gmrass-Fed Steak Plate, and it did not disappointed. The steak was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, accompanied by a generous serving of Mac and cheese and chipotle garlic potatoes were so yummy per my Teens. My Hubby got free range Chicken with zero disappointment!! The staff is attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the food they serve. They were more than happy to accommodate special requests and provide recommendations, enhancing the overall dining experience. To finish, we indulged n the hummingbird cake and cookies.
